The only warning she got that she was being followed was the flick of a shadow in the headlights. Before she could react, a massive golden dragon slammed down on the road in front of her about half a mile out. She almost expected the ground to shake with the force, but the act was near silent.
Dammit.
She gritted her teeth and tightened her hands on the wheel. Rather than stop, Kasia hit the gas, pushing the car to go faster. He wasn’t taking her without a fight, that was for damn sure.
The dragon’s deep golden scales glittered in the oncoming headlights. He didn’t budge. But he did growl, his tail slashing back and forth.
“Move, you scaly bastard,” she muttered.
But she didn’t let up on the pedal.
He lowered his head and let loose a growl of warning, which she responded to by stomping harder on the gas.
“Get out of the way!”
She had no intention of playing chicken. If he didn’t, she’d ram this car down his fire-breathing throat. The hell with it. She didn’t want to go back to that cabin in Alaska anyway. Maul would miss her, but he’d be the only one.
Only the dragon didn’t move. Okay then. Kasia braced for impact.
At the moment she should’ve slammed into him, the beast heaved himself into the air, and she zoomed past, fishtailing underneath him from the force of the wind his wings caused.
He must’ve backed up, because he landed on the road in front of her again.
“You want another go, you oversized flying iguana?” she shouted, and bore down on him.
And again, he hopped out of her way only to land in her path.
Damn. Kasia held in a scream of fear-tinged frustration. They could keep this up all night, getting them nowhere fast. He wasn’t going to let her go.
With a growl of aggravation, though not defeat, Kasia stomped on the brakes. The tires squealed in protest, and the unpleasant odor of burning rubber followed her as she skidded the car to a stop broadside of the dragon, only a few feet away. If she rolled down her window, she could reach out and touch him.
The terrifying creature moved around the car, his movements more of a glide, like golden water flowing around her. He lowered his head to gaze in at her with an eye the size of her entire thigh. He snorted, and smoke trailed from his nostrils as he glared at her.
Please let this be Brand, and not some other phoenix-stealing dragon shifter.
Kasia glared back but raised her hands off the steering wheel in a gesture of surrender.

After she set her glass down, Lathen brushed a couple strands of hair out of her eyes and searched her face. “Are you all right?”
“I’m tired, my wedding is in a couple weeks, I have ghosts fighting over who is going to do what. Guests that have no idea the place is haunted and… Your family and pack, my parents, Gwen… To top it all off, the head of my clan, who is a ghost, is sitting in front of me wanting to know who is coming to the wedding and whether the ghosts will be outed. How could I possibly be all right?”

The first knight to come along could capture the lady and her castle. Sir Roark plans to be that knight. But Lady Alyss has other plans. It’s a marriage only love can save.

(Set up: Sir Roark has been injured in an attack against King Richard in which Roark’s lord proved to be a traitor. With his lord gone, so is Roark’s hope of his own land and home, something he’s worked toward all his adult life. But then the feverish Roark meets an old solider sent from England to bring back a young knight who Roark learns has died in the attack. No one is left at the castle in England but the young knight’s sister, holding out against all comers.)
“Don’t know how I’ll tell Lord Ulrich his boy’s dead. If the lord’s still alive, himself.”
The man downed a good bit of the fresh cup of ale. “There’s trouble at home. Maybe more since I left.”
He stared at the cup’s remaining contents, sighed, and his elbow slipped off the edge of the table. Ale sloshed on the floor. He carefully placed his elbow back onto the plank top. “Sir Henry’s needed ’t home. And the men. If there’s no help, the next siege’ll end us.”
Roark shook his head to clear the ringing in his ears. It didn’t. “Your lord is under a siege?”
“Not last I knew, but that’ll change. Devil’s spawn Jasper of Windom—went away, but he wants our land and our lady. He’ll be back.”
The old man slammed down his cup. “If he learns Lord Ulrich’s bad off again, he’ll come like before, and this time he won’t leave.
“Jasper of Windom plans a siege against your lord?” Roark couldn’t seem to get the story straight.
The knight nodded and leaned in, his voice becoming softer. “That Satan’s backside thinks he’ll take the castle and Lady Alyss. And her all worried about little Lady Evie.”
The old one’s voice sounded distant, but Roark was too tired to move closer. A little sword nick shouldn’t wear him out like this. The pain seemed less now. Another drink might help. Roark waved at the serving maid as the old man continued to mutter.
“What about your lord?” Roark managed.
“Healer says he won’t recover. Now our boy’s dead, Lady Alyss’ll be defenseless. The first knight to come along could marry her and take all. She deserves better.”
The ringing in Roark’s ears receded. A lady alone. A castle undefended. “Who is your lord?”

I’m a former college prof and before that, journalist for small town dailies. Small towns are microcosms of the world, so I covered murders, bank robberies, drug raids, political conventions, and the biggest tomatoes of the season. And hot air balloon rallies. Seven years since their breakup, Jolene Kualoha spotted Danker Donahue, ambling from the parking lot toward the store. She recognized him by his height and long gait. Wind from the north ruffled his hair and brought a bone-biting chill to her heart. Nuts, here he was, ducking his head to miss the bell overhead. It tinkled, and a strange twisting sensation hit her in the stomach.
This happened at the Kalua-Kona Food Emporium on a Sunday morning in July. She stared from where she stood near the avocados. His dangerous edge drew her in, but she turned her back to him. She and Danker were a couple when the test confirmed his fatherhood. Her heart ached at the memory. Love hurt, but that wasn’t all. Loneliness hurt. Losing someone hurt. Decision-making hurt when you force yourself to do the right thing.
She’d pulled away, giving him space to work on his previous relationship for the sake of their child. The most shameful thing a woman can do is take parents away from a baby, and this began her year of stubborn steadfastness.
I did the breakup rituals. Got the dramatic haircut. Engraved a piece of jewelry he got me with a new message. Deleted the photos that made me cry.
