Interview L. A. McGinnis Author of The Moon
Give a warm welcome to L.A. McGinnis author of the Moon, book two of The Banished Gods Series! Pull up a chair, grab a drink of your choice from the cooler, a Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate, and let’s find out a little about Laura and The Moon!
What defines you as an author? My creativity and ability to craft a story. As a person? Are they one in the same? Yes, but as a person, it extends into art as well.
What inspired this particular story? Well, I’d always wanted to set a book in Chicago because it’s one of my favorite cities to visit. It started out as a story about fallen angels banished to earth, but once I switched the main characters over to the Norse gods, I liked the way everything was working out much better. And I had a vision for an apocalyptic series where the characters could move between worlds, like the Nine Realms. Once I began writing book four or five (I can’t exactly remember) and began playing around with moving back and forth between the realms, and the series seemed to lean towards the urban fantasy genre, all the elements just seemed to slip into place perfectly.
What makes you laugh out loud? My cousin Vinny- still!
What makes you angry? People who bully other people, just because they can.
Why did you choose the cover concept you did? My cover artist and I went back and forth between a couple different concepts, but we settled on this because of the strength of the images- each one is tied to the main theme of the book, and leaves an indelible image in the readers head (hopefully).
Why should we read this book/series and what sets you apart from the rest and makes your book/series unique? I don’t think outside of the Avengers movie series much attention has been given to the Norse gods, one of my dearest loves since I was about six of seven years old. I’ve always been fascinated with them, and I wanted to give them a modern twist and introduce them to a new audience. Especially some of the lesser known gods, like Fenrir, Mir and Tyr. Pus, each book has a wonderful love story at its core, with a damaged hero and sometimes an equally damaged heroine trying to piece their lives back together.
Who would you recommend this book to and what should readers be aware of before reading it?
Anyone who loves Karen M Moning Fever series, or Laura Thalassa’s The Bargainer series would find these books interesting. I’d categorize them urban fantasy romance, but as the series goes on, there is a definite post apocolytic/dystopian theme woven through as the characters fight to stop the world from coming to an end.
Tell us something about yourself and allow us to get to know you. I started writing seriously in 2007, and then took a lampworking (glass making) class that summer on a lark. By the end of that year I had a side business in glass going, and by 2009, I was running a full-fledged online art business. Now it’s my only fulltime job, but it derailed my writing career for about 6-7 years until I found a balance between my full time job, my art business and writing.
What secret do you use to blast through writer’s block? I usually switch gears to something less glamourous- like research on another book, or outlining my next project, or editing. I usually have 3-6 projects going at a time, so there is always something to do. I think the trick is not to get bogged down, then you get frustrated. By the time I get to start writing again, I’m happy to be able to sit down and get new words on paper.
Who is your favorite character of all of the books you’ve written and Why? In this current series, it’s Ava Burke, because you’re going to see a huge character arc for her from book one to book seven, and she is going to blow your mind.
What inspired you to write? I’ve been reading voraciously since I was about five, but it wasn’t until my kids were in middle school that it occurred to me it was something I might want to do. I actually got in an argument with my youngest son over an assignment, which turned into a competition between the two of us (I won), and I found I really liked writing.
How long have you been writing? Since 2007, but 2010 was when I began to take it seriously and started going to conferences, joining local writing groups and figuring out the craft.
Did you tell friends and family that you were writing a book? Or did it take a while to come out and tell friends and family you were a writer? Oh, it took me a really long time. I think my husband thought I was up to something because I was sitting up late at night on the computer for months and months. But when I finally told him he was super supportive.
Do you see yourself in your characters? Of course, there’s a little of me in every one of them!
What do you want your readers to take away from your books? That you can survive anything. That you can heal and move past even the worst of situation, and there is always something better waiting for you, if you’re willing to work for it.
Where do your story ideas come from? If they come to you in the middle of the night, do you get up and write them all down? I’ve had those, and they are usually so terrible that I’ve stopped getting up in the middle of the night to write them down! I have found writing a series is easier than a stand-alone, at least for me. I like how the main plot holds everything together, but you can build up each book onto that, and the idea do come more easily when you have much of it already set out in your head.
Do you find it easier to write from a male or female point of view? Why? I like to write both, and I don’t find either easier or harder. For me it comes down to character. I find it’s harder for me to write conflict and love scenes than anything else!
Why do you write what you write? Contemporary, paranormal, suspense, etc. I’m not sure. I started out writing literary fiction, then moved to YA fantasy, then paranormal, now I’m in urban fantasy, I think it’s just a natural progression of growth and
If writing is your first passion, what is your second? Art- I love to paint!
What do you like to do when you are not writing? I usually am reading!
You’ve got a time machine, a cloak of invisibility, and one hour. Where would you go, and what eavesdropping would you do? I would love to visit Nuremberg, Germany in the late 1400’s and see Albrecht Durer, one of my all-time favorite artists!
Okay, you’re casting the movie version of your novel – who would you choose for the main characters? We’re talking dream cast. Oh wow. So I have them in my head, but no one who is famous…But a young David Gandy for Fenrir, Lee Pace (with white hair) for Odin,
What’s your favorite part of being an author? Just those occasions when I get to sit down and write, which are becoming rarer and rarer, sadly. But I do love when I start a new project, and there’s nothing in front of me but white paper!
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why? I would love to be able to time travel, I think that would be valuable.
What’s your approach to writing? Are you a plotter or follow your characters flow (Pantser)? I am a total pantser, I can’t stick to an outline past chapter one, even when I try.
Tell us three things we’d find if we looked under your heroine’s bed? How about the hero’s bed? Haha, well, the heroine does have something hidden under her bed. But she’d have a secret box, a baseball bat and a pile of journals, and the hero would have a silver neckchain, a book and a dagger.

Tells us about The Moon.
It’s always darkest before the dawn.
But they’ve never seen the place I came from.
For four years, life has been good for Celine Barrows.
But when the God of Chaos comes calling, Celine must answer. Her one chance at salvation is a stranger who makes no promises, and leads her on a journey into the very darkness she thought she had escaped. As the world shatters around her, and war looms on the horizon, Celine discovers that sometimes it takes a monster to defeat a monster.
A peek between the pages of The Moon.
There were many things that Celine had overcome. Poverty, for one. Hunger for another. She’d learned how to go for days and days without eating. How to fill her stomach with water so it didn’t ache so sharply. How to steal, first, out of desperation, then out of simple need, but never without regret. She’d learned to lie, and to manipulate. She’d learned to fight, to use weapons to defend herself against men bigger and stronger than herself. To survive in a world where it seemed everyone wanted to hurt her.
And finally, how to construct a carefully organized world to keep all of these dangerous memories at bay.
But there were some things that she had never fully left behind. Things that were meant to stay locked away in the darkness. And the biggest, baddest of those was currently sitting in this room, face to face with her.
“You’ve grown to be quite beautiful.” Her father stood, glancing at the man behind her. “I see Buchanan wasn’t exaggerating, when he told me what you looked like.” The quaking probably started somewhere around her knees, she decided, before moving up through her body, and by the time David Barrows towered over her, circled slowly around her, fear consumed her completely.
About the Author:
From the very first time she picked up a book, Laura was hooked. When she wasn’t running through the woods or rescuing animals, she could be found curled up in the backyard reading, escaping to even greater adventures.
But then came high school, boys and fast cars, and somewhere in between, her dream of writing the really, really big story got lost. Until finally she walked into a classroom at KSU , discovered Old English and Norse Mythology and her love of writing began anew.
An In’D’Tale fantasy finalist, Laura lives in northeastern Ohio, at the edge of a national park with her husband and one very spoiled German shepherd, writing paranormal, fantasy and dystopian romances.
It was wonderful having you with us today. Please feel free to stop by anytime. Good Luck with The Moon!

Interview Charlotte O’Shay Author of Forever in a Moment
Welcome Charlotte O’Shay author of Forever in a Moment, a Deerbourne Inn novella. I simply love these books in the Deetbourne Inn Series set in small town Willow Springs, Vermont. This is a fun multi-author series you don’t want to miss. Pull up a chair, grab a drink of your choice from the cooler, a Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate, and let’s find out a little about Charlotte and Forever in a Moment.
Tell us a little about Forever in a Moment.
A stormy encounter…
Samantha DeMartino’s Christmas wedding is two weeks away when her fiancé calls the whole thing off. Word on the street: his cold feet are being heated by an old flame. With her well-ordered world in complete disarray, Sam’s friends convince her to go on her honeymoon—alone. A week at a charming Vermont inn away from the city and her demanding corporate career could be just what she needs to figure out her next steps.
Between his twenty-four seven work schedule on his family’s dairy farm and teaching tourists to ski, Jed Armstrong’s too busy to think about how lonely he is…until Sam sings her way into his life during a Christmas blizzard. Now he has to figure out a way to convince her to stay.
Can a vivacious city girl find forever with a reclusive farmer?
Will her secret keep her from trying?
A sneak peek between the pages of Forever in a Moment:
I stand and shove my hat on my head, anxious to go, not bothering to tuck in the unruly curls escaping my braid.
“Thanks, Jed. Um, tomorrow I’ve made other plans. But…um…thanks for these lessons. I’ve learned so much.” After that stilted speech, which I’ve been practicing in my head for the last five minutes, I smile so wide my bottom teeth are surely showing.
I back toward the door trying to memorize the exact way his hair catches the light streaming through the window. When I put my hand in my jacket pocket, his jaw clamps so hard and his eyes go so dark, I wonder what I’ve done to merit his displeasure before I realize he thinks I’m reaching for cash to tip him. But I pull out my gloves and put them on. They’re my final armor against him. God knows I’ll never forget the feel of his hands on me, whether gentle, capable or rough. I still feel them all over me, cupping my jaw, roving my body, tangling in my hair. I turn and reach for the handle on the door.
“Samantha.” If his voice were angry or commanding I’d have kept going. But his voice is low and there’s an anguished, guttural quality to the way he says my name. And I won’t have it. I can’t have him thinking anything negative about me after I go.
When I turn, he takes a step toward me and I raise a hand. “Stop…I can’t think when you get too close.” My face heats as those damning words spill out and he chuckles, a genuine laugh and it’s the only one between us today.
“Glad I still amuse you.” I fold my arms across my chest.
“I feel the same way, Sam.”
“Jed, don’t make this tougher,” I say but he keeps speaking in that same harsh voice.
“When I’m near you everything fades away except the need to be closer. Close enough to watch your eyes cloud up when I’m about to kiss you, close enough to hear your breathing get ragged when my hands are on you.”
“Jed, we agreed…”
He shakes his head. “No, I gave in. Because you asked me to. If I had my way, I’d see you all day, every day and… sleep with you every night. I…”
“Stop,” I say. “This, us, whatever this is—can’t happen. I go back to New York in a couple of days.” “Sam, I…” “No.” I slash my hand through the air. “I don’t know what’s happening to me.” I’m on edge, close to tears at the way I can’t control my response to him. And all my precious logic is eluding me.
He plows a hand through his hair then captures my gaze with his and I can’t look away.
“What’s happening is us. We’re happening. This is our beginning. You and me together. I’d started to think it would never happen. But it did. When I saw you that first night…I knew. And you did too.”
“No.” My denial is swift. “No. I didn’t. It’s not that simple. We hardly know each other…” I lift my chin in spite of the flush I know covers my cheeks. I think of Jed kissing me awake in bed after a perfect, unforgettable night and I squeeze my eyes shut at the sharp stab of need the recollection brings. But it’s true, isn’t it? We don’t know each other. I surprise myself when a tear trickles down my cheek and I swipe it fast.

My review on Forever in a Moment
Your heart goes out to Samantha DeMartino when her fiancé calls off their Christmas wedding two weeks before the event. Since the honeymoon already paid for (by the scumbag that jilted her) she goes alone to a cozy Vermont Inn. On her way to Deerbourn Inn her SUV runs out of gas in a blinding blizzard. She has no choice but to try to make it to the Inn on foot. I loved the scene where she is walking in the blizzard singing Christmas carols when Jed Armstrong stops to give her a ride to the Inn. The author describes the scene so well you feel like you are right there with her. Also you can identify with Jed when he considers her crazy for being out in the blizzard on foot.
I love to be swept along in the story with characters so full of life and setting described so well you can see, hear and smell the scene. Kudo’s to Ms. O’Shay! If you like second chance stories in a small town this book is for you! Don’t wait another minute, grab your copy today.
5 stars

What secret do you use to blast through writer’s block? From time to time I experience writer’s block and normally when I do it means I need to get out of the house and get away from my normal routine. When it does happens, I go for long car rides, to the beach, mountains, historic old towns, etc. I also find that taking long walks at my favorite park, nature walk, or golf course always does wonders in filling my mind with new ideas. How long have you been writing?
I started writing at a very young age. When I was a child I had very vivid dreams, I would tell my parents and grandmother when I woke up. My first recollection is of being given a tablet to write my dreams on. After that, I wrote, everything from dreams to poems, etc. The first book I wrote was in sixth grade. It was a very short novelette.
What do you like to do when you are not writing? When I’m not writing I love to do many things. I have many interests; I love to play at golf; I say the word “play golf” because I am a newbie to golf. I love going to the movies, concerts, I also love Gardening. I love growing flowers I have many species of flowers from geraniums, roses, jasmines, jade plants I am proud of as well as a bird of paradise that’s doing well. I also love to take long car drives and go for long walks, I especially love to walk on old trails, in the mountains enjoying nature as I walk.
A sneak peek between the pages of When A Take Dreams:
ENZO RAWLINS hadn’t a care in the world as he laid back as Kalita Lopez worked magic with her tongue.
The sun crept up against the window pane just as he screamed her name. “Kalita, baby! Kalita. Damn that was good.”
Kalita Lopez was a mesmerizing beauty. The kind of woman who knew how to use her sex as a weapon, an instrument of pure pleasure, and a way to support herself.
“Enzo,” she purred. “Kalita likes you. But you don’t pay the rent. It’s time for you to go. I must meet a diplomat at two o’clock today. I need my rest. By the way, pick up those empty champagne bottles and put them outside in the recycle bin for me when you leave.”
“What?” Enzo stared at her with hurt dark eyes and realized he hadn’t seen that coming.
“Look Enzo don’t be hurt. Everyone has to earn a living. You’ve been with me almost four days now. The money Ryker gave me was good, but I’ve been handling you on charity for the last two days and that’s because you’re pretty good with that weapon you’re stroking right now.”
“So, you’re not one of Ryker’s old flames?” He asked but didn’t wait for an answer. “You’re a hooker.”
“Hell no!” she said in perfect English.
“And you’ve got a phony accent too? What next?”
Kalita got up out of the bed and picked up Enzo’s cloths and threw them at him. “Look Enzo, this is Silicon Valley in case you haven’t noticed. Rents and mortgages aren’t cheap. Now don’t you have a job or something to go to?”
Enzo shook his head and then thought about it. Why not tell the truth for a change? “No, I’m sort of in between jobs,” he said. “Hell, I should get paid to do what you do. I could use some fast money.”
Kalita studied him slowly. His naked male form was sexy to behold. Her mind raced. Enzo was good at wielding that penis of his, like a gallant Knight on a mission. But was he sincere, she wondered?
She knew what social skills were needed to handle a job like she had. Enzo had those skills. Plus, he was good at laying down some really classy, sexy, sweet talk on a moment’s notice. Not to mention that sexy thing he did with his tongue.
Kalita was good at judging people. And then she made a decision and flashed Enzo a grin. “Well…Well …Well,” she said thoughtfully. “Are you just looking for a hobby to do when you get bored? Or are you serious about that making some fast money?”
“And how,” Enzo said with a lascivious grin.
“You know you are a sexy stud muffin and I do know a few wealthy elderly ladies who would just get a kick out of letting you use that weapon you call a penis on them.”
Enzo grew silent.
Kalita decided to sweeten the pot. “I know a company that is hiring, and all you have to do is be nice to a few women and let them see how capable you are in the bedroom,” she hesitated, smiling wickedly.
She let her words sink in watching his brain digest the information.
“Are you serious Enzo? I mean about making some fast money,” she finally asked.
RYKER GRANGER sat beside his father’s hospital bed and realized that his parents weren’t the invincible. He also realized he envied the relationship his parents had together.
A stabbing pain shot through his father as he tried to sit up and reach out. “Ouch!”
“Dad, what are you thinking? Just lie still,” Ryker said.
“I hate waking up in a hospital room,” Colbert declared. “What happened to me anyway?”
“All I know is one-minute Isabella is yelling for me to come quickly because you were having chest pains and the next thing I knew you collapsed in my arms. You’ve been in the hospital a week now.”
“Yeah, I remember that,” Colbert nodded. “Did the doctors say what was wrong with me?”
“They said you were dehydrated, exhausted, and your blood pressure was running higher than normal, and they are still running tests.”
Colbert reached for the blanket. “I want to pull the blanket closer,” his father said and then looked around the room.
“Let me do that,” Ryker said, adjusting the blanket.
His father glanced around the room. “Where’s your mother?”
“Isabella took her downstairs to the cafeteria,” Ryker replied.
“Hah!” His father nodded and smiled. “I seriously doubt that. The two of them probably rushed off somewhere to find the nearest Thai restaurant.”
Ryker had to admit he was right. “You know it.”
Colbert Granger leaned up and raised his hand. He waved Ryker closer. “Good, because there’s something I wanted to talk to you about, in private, son.”
“Yes, sir,” Ryker replied.
“Let me cut to the chase Ryker. I’m your father and I’d like to feel that you got that Taker instinct from me. Chasing women, loving the art of doing business. You know what I mean,” his father laughed out.
Ryker smiled coolly and sat in silence.
“Hell, you’re a hot-blooded Granger just like me. I know you got that chasing tail gene from me, that’s for sure.”
Ryker read his father’s eyes and a smile flitted across his face.
The two shared a laugh.
All at once Colbert inhaled a deep breath and stared back at his son. “But Ryker, by the time I was your age I was married to your mother and she was pregnant with you. Now I know you don’t want to give up your freedom. And that’s why I’ve given this a lot of thought.”
Ryker stood there staring back at his father.
“And you know what else Ryker?” He pointed to the chair. “Maybe you should sit down before I say what I’m going to say.”
Ryker pulled a chair in close. “Okay, what is it Dad?”
Colbert Granger cleared his throat. “Ryker, I love you, son,” he hesitated. “And I know you know all about my having your half-brother, Steele Coltrane two years before you were born.”
“Dad I know all about the family history. Why are you telling me this?”
His father frowned. “I’m getting to that part Ryker, indulge your father for once and let me finish,” he said with a tilt of his head. “Anyway, like I was saying that Cierra Cantrell is one really nice girl. And I want grandchildren, so does your mother and since getting married and starting a family is the farthest thing from your mind. Your mother and I discussed it and we agreed that Cierra was the perfect young woman to have our grandchildren by.”
The moment was silent.
Finally, Colbert spoke. “You see Ryker, sometimes parents have to make hard choices. They have to look at their children in a way where they evaluate them to see what strengths they have and what weaknesses. Now take you for instance, you have an authoritative manner, but your disposition is like mine when I was your age. I loved to sow my wild oats too. Did you know Ryker, that in ancient times the Egyptians believed that there was danger in giving too much power to the youngest son?”
AT JUST PAST TEN O’clock that night Kalita Lopez called Enzo Rawlins’ cell phone and gave him the information.
After taking a shower and changing he packed a small overnight bag and walked out of his home and loaded his car.
Growing up in the upscale Berryessa Area of San Jose, he had been like all the other kids who had graduated from Piedmont High School, with big dreams of one day starting the next big dot.com business. But part of being Enzo Rawlins was always having a back-up plan.
Enzo’s back up plan always seemed to involve controlling others. Especially horny women with big bank accounts, he thought as he drove down the street.
***
An hour later, he pulled his car into the driveway of the affluent home in Oak View Estates in the rustling hills of Alamden Valley.
He thought the mansion was in typical California Spanish hacienda Style as he walked to the front door.
The front door opened promptly.
“Luanne Lanchon?” Enzo asked curiously, feeling he had to be the luckiest gigolo on the face of the planet.
“Yes, and you must be Enzo,” she said. “Come on in. Oh, and I have the Gayot Rosé Champagne. Kalita said that it was your favorite,” she said in her soft southern drawl.
Luanne Lanchon was a beautiful sixty-something woman with a slim build and big breasts. Her long, full black hair was laced, intermittently with silvers of gray.
“I have a fire going in my pleasure chamber,” Luanne said, closing the door behind them. She walked down the dim lighted foyer like she was an imperious queen, as the tiered sheer negligée she wore flowed after her.
Enzo fell in step behind her and caught a whiff of her perfume as it hung thickly in the air around them.
Minutes later, Luanne led the way into the pleasure chamber, a luxurious bedroom suite at the far end of the mansion, complete with a full bar, a sitting area in front of a roaring fireplace, and huge sliding glass doors.
