Narrators: Kate Tyler

Series: Lobster Cove, Book 1

Length: 9 hours 47 minutes

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

Released: Oct. 19, 2017

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Pepper McKay comes from a long line of powerful witches. Unfortunately, magic brings her nothing but trouble. She learned the love of wildlife rescue and rehab from her Aunt Ashling. After graduating from college, Pepper works for Salem Wildlife Sanctuary and lives from paycheck to paycheck until she inherits the McKay property in Lobster Cove. With the family land and resources, she dares to dream of starting her own wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center.

Lathen Quartz, a former Navy SEAL turned handyman maintains the enchanted McKay property for the McKay estate. But someone is trying to steal the McKay magic. Lathen offers to help Pepper achieve her life-long dream of building a wildlife center. During the long hours spent together on the project, their mutual attraction can’t be denied. But each harbors a deep, dark secret. Will they overcome their demons and give love a chance?

I own a copy and have listened to the audiobook, A Witch’s Journey, a paranormal romance. I am  participating in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions in support of  Kate Tyler the sponsor of this tour. She’s the fantastic narrator of A Witch’s Journey. I can honestly say that Kate’s narration of A Witch’s Journey brought the book’s characters to life.  A story of wildlife rescue and rehab, magic, second chances,  and the love of family and friends. What better way to forget your trials and tribulations than relax and listen to a feel good audiobook? A Witch’s Journey will whisk you away from your ordinary world into a romantic fantasy adventure that you’ll never want to end. Pepper and Lathen’s journey begins with building a wildlife rescue & rehab center in the small town of Lobster Cove. Along the way, they discover the healing power of love and family. I highly recommend this book!

Best-selling author, Tena Stetler, has an over-active imagination and writes award-winning paranormal romance novels. She wrote her first vampire romance as a tween, to the chagrin of her mother and the delight of her friends. Colorado is home; shared with her husband of many moons, a brilliant Chow, a spoiled parrot and a forty-five-year-old box turtle.

Her books tell stories of magical kick-ass women and mystical alpha males that dare to love them. Well, okay there are a few companion animals to round out the tales. Travel and adventure flourish in her novels. Any summer evening, you can find her curled up in front of a crackling fire with a good book, a glass of raspberry iced tea and a bowl of popcorn.

  • How did you wind up narrating audiobooks? Was it always your goal or was it something you stumbled into by chance?
    • Great question! My son, Drew, was 15 and ½ last summer. That’s a tough age for a kid entering summer because it’s a little too young for a summer job, and a little too old for a summer camp. We wanted to come up with something that we could do together during the summer to keep him busy, that would be fun and interactive, where he could earn a little side-money and something that might look good on a college resume! We searched Google for something he could do and among the suggestions we found narrating audiobooks. Since he and I both have a background in stage theater and improv, we thought it might be fun. I’m an avid audiobook listener and thought it would be fun! We ordered some equipment online and it came on a Saturday from Amazon. Drew had everything set up that night and we were off and running the next day, auditioning for books!
  • A lot of narrators seem to have a background in theatre. Is that something you think is essential to a successful narration career?
    • Yeah, that’s what most people think. Yes, I’m in theater and so is my son. It definitely helps, but it’s absolutely not essential. Since I’ve been in this world, I’ve gotten to know a lot of narrators and many of them would describe themselves as introverts. I’m an extrovert so I found that funny. But when you think about it, you’re all alone in a small room when you work, so it works well for people who are naturally introverted. Kind of cool, right?
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • Oh yes. I love audiobooks. I listen every week if not every day to something awesome on audio. I re-listen to stuff. I even follow a few narrators when I really like their voice. If I love a voice, I’ll check out everything they’ve done and if it appeals to me, I’ll grab it. I travel a lot for business and pleasure and I listen in the car, on trains, on airplanes and so on. I definitely listen when I’m working out. Nothing can make five miles go faster than a few good chapters of a zombie thriller!
  • Is there a particular genre you feel unsuited for? Have you ever declined a project because you didn’t think you were right for it?
    • So, yes. I’ve declined projects. Most people think it’s all acting, but there are some things I just don’t want to narrate because I just don’t believe in them. If there is a self-help book that gives advice I just disagree with, I’d turn it down. Narrating self-help is different from acting in that it’s your voice trying to convince someone of something. If you don’t believe it yourself, you’ve got two problems. One, you won’t like saying it. Two, it will come through as fake to the listener. All bad outcomes. So it’s best they find someone else. That could be true for other narrators with other touchy subjects like politics or religion too.
  • How closely do you prefer to work with authors?
    • I like to get to know the authors and what they are looking for. It’s the dream in their head we’re trying to make happen, so I want to try to get as close to that as possible. And, selfishly, I’m a sucker for applause and encouragement. So if my author loves my voice and they are telling me how much they enjoy how I’m doing a certain character, that’s a huge bonus for me. I love working with an author who is not shy in telling me when they are loving what I bring to the book!
  • Has anyone ever recognized you from your voice?
    • Um. No. A big no on that one. I guess it could happen, but I’ve actually gifted some of my audiobooks to friends and family and they’re like: “Are you sure that’s really you?” I think they mean it as a compliment, but with family you never can tell!
  • Have there been any characters that you really connected with?
    • Oh sure! You spend a lot of time with a book and voicing the characters. So a lot of what you bring to it is your own personality. It happens more often than not that you are feeling the emotions right along with the character. In Witchs’ Journey there were some exciting parts and some scary parts and some dreamy parts. You end up feeling all of those as you bring voices alive.
  • Do you read reviews for your audiobooks?
    • Absolutely! Reviews can be very important for the success of an audiobook. I encourage listeners to leave reviews. Whenever I see a book with one or two reviews I check out the reviewers page. Does it have one review or many? If there’s only one review, I tend to wonder if it was just the author’s mom who wrote something nice. Reviews from reviewers who read 30+ books a year are key. They really know what they like and the reviews are more deep than “I liked it a lot.” It’s been fun to get reviews that say things like: “I will definitely listen to Kate Tyler again!” That way I know I’ve done my job right.
  • What type of the review comments do you find most constructive?
    • I like reading reviews that give a taste of the story. Some sort of recap of what they thought the book was about. Once they’ve done that, then I want to see their impressions about how well the story was put together, and how well the narrator did the voices or characterizations.
  • Who is your “dream author” that you would like to record for?
    • Well, gee, I’d say Brene Brown, because I love her, but she usually does her own stuff which makes a lot of sense. If you know her, you know you want to hear her voice reading her material. And she’s very captivating to listen to. Not all authors can read their own material, but she is very talented and makes the book come alive.
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    • Oh, no. I think listening is equally as valuable as page turning. In fact, there are statistics that show that people who buy a book has about a 10% chance of reading it cover to cover. Audiobook listeners generally listen end to end about 80% of the time. If your goal is to get your story or message into a person, audiobook wins hands down. Not only that, page-turners are usually different people than listeners. If you want to reach a larger audience, you have to consider that. Making it available in different formats makes it accessible to a larger group of people. And after all, isn’t that the point?

Tell us a little about Dreams of Ice and Shadow;

Luca has discovered his father’s hideout. He hunts the legendary vampire alone, pushing Katelyn away to safety. But Dracula is not so easily bested. He evades Luca so he can tap into Katelyn’s power—the magic that lies at the heart of Icarya. Luca’s heart sinks as his father draws him further and further from his eternal love.

Across the Great Sea, Katelyn is summoned to the slave city Likhan. After the death of Seht Reza, Likhan teeters toward revolution as her nephew Darien seeks the throne. To help him, Kate must work alongside Alaric, the assassin who will stop at nothing to win her back in Luca’s absence. The dark forces mounting against Darien leave Kate vulnerable to the destructive pull of her elemental nature.

Dreams of Ice and Shadow is the heart-stopping second volume of the Frostbite series, where gothic terrors invade epic fantasy. Sinister, unnatural horrors are unleashed, and Katelyn and Luca’s passions burn brighter than ever as the dangers facing Icarya threaten to separate them forever.

How about a sneak peek between the pages of Dreams of Ice and Shadow?

The Indigo Forest was steeped in shadow as the sun sank, staining the waters beyond the cragged slope leading to Cathair. The canopy of the trees pulled closed, a tightly woven net drawing the darkness into its dense center. There, a shape blacker than the forest’s deepest shadows lurked. Two bright lights ringed with a searing, luminescent red darted between thick trunks. Elongated paws crept through underbrush without the resounding crunch of dried leaves and dead grass. The beast stopped in a small clearing and rested on its powerful haunches. Baring its extended canines, the wolf reached its front paw up to its face. The paw separated into pale, prehensile fingers midair and reached into the mouth of a human face. The menacing canines remained. The lycanthrope’s clear eyes, straight nose, and thick dark brows made him the mirror-image of Luca. Or rather, this visage had been Luca’s inheritance. The sole difference was the cold, calculating countenance that was permanent on the shadow’s face.

He retrieved the crystal orb he had carried in his lupine mouth, examining it carefully. He had taken the orb from an abandoned campfire, trying to uncover its secrets, and the path to wielding the untold power he sensed with every fiber of his undead existence.

Dracula had studied for days and nights without end, searching for the clue that would unlock the magic trapped inside the crystalline sphere. Just as he felt he was nearing a breakthrough, his hideaway had been discovered by his son, born of a human mother, and razed to the ground. Luca had also succeeded in destroying Rene, the only consort Dracula had taken since unwittingly tracking his son across the universe and into the magical realm of Icarya. His seething anger was mitigated by his pride.

Despite the setback, the vampire lord seemed to have stumbled upon the very answer he sought. Before Rene’s house had collapsed, the orb had soaked in blood and grown before his eyes. His piercing gaze dissected the orb now, sifting through its murky contents for an explanation. His pupils caught the impression of a quick, slight movement. He rotated it in his palm, but the center of the orb remained stubbornly obfuscated by a pale cloud of plasma.

Tempting fate, the dark prince brought his index finger to his mouth, puncturing the tip and dropping a small quantity of blood onto the orb. The crimson droplet ran down the curve of the orb, filling in a crease in his palm. A moment’s disappointment was stymied as the line written in blood shrank, pulled into the orb by an unseen force. It took a breath, emitting a sound like ice expanding. Dracula peered again into the milky obscurity. This time, he spied an impossibly small, humanoid form.

Elated, Dracula laid the orb at his feet and pulled a small, sharp dagger out of his singed coat. He dug the point into his hand, feeding the orb a continual stream, eyes gleaming as he watched it grow. Sensing his son’s nearness, he withdrew his blade suddenly. Their fated reunion, the meeting that Dracula had planned with such diligence for millennia, was rapidly approaching. Father would soon be ready to face his formidable son. But not yet. He grabbed the sphere, grown too large for him to close his fist around, and evaporated. The cells of his body transformed into waterlogged air, spreading a thick blanket of fog throughout the forest, looking for refuge.

WebsiteTwitterFacebook

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Amy Deuchler. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

The audio book brought to life Beyond the Mist. Amy did a wonderful job of bringing the book and characters to life. The Beyond The Mist is dedicated to the victims of the September 11, 21 terrorist attack on United States soil and was written with author Casi McLean’s deepest respect and compassion for their families and friends.  That being said, this tale is an exciting fictional prospective of the possibilities of time travel and bad decisions made for the right reasons.

Beyond the Mist returns to a tiny hamlet nestled in the north Georgia Mountains and the eerie Lake Lanier.  Is it cursed or is something else going on here? A prototype time machine perhaps taking advantage of a seismic shift creating a portal though time in Lake Lanier? Unauthorized use can cause unbelievable consequences to the timeline for those involved and those not.

Nick Cramer blames himself for the death of former girlfriend, Carly Patterson, if only he could go back in time to right his perceived wrong. Piper Taylor is willing to risk her life to save Nick from himself and the disastrous results of his actions during his time-slip to 2001. Can they correct results of Nick’s well-meaning actions in time to set the timeline on the right path? Will Nick realize that Piper is may well be his destiny?

The events swirl around the days leading up to and during September 11, 2001.  The actions of the character’s will keep you enthralled until the very last page.

I loved this book! An exciting, unique tale of time travel adventure with second chances at true love. Twists and turns in Beyond the Mist will keep you listening until the end and wonder what’s next in the world beyond the mist.

Five Stars in my book!

  1. How did you select your narrator? I compare the search to looking through a ton of oysters to find a pearl. I’m super picky about narrators. I want them to feel the passion and pain in my story and put emphisis where I have it in my mind. The narrator has to fit the tone of the book and know what makes the characters react the way they do. Not an easy task, but I know when I hear the clips.
  2. Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing? All of my writing has a piece of me written between the lines, especially my Lake Lanier Mysteries Series. The first time I heard the eerie lore, strange occurances and supernatural sitings, my muse danced. The tales told me what to write, and the pages flowed like water. Now that I live on the lake, I’m inspired every day.
  3. Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you? I don’t know what I’d do without audiiobooks. After a long day of sitting at my computer, reading, writing, research, promo, and marketing, my eyes blur. I love to read, but my eyes just say enough is enough. Audiobooks take me into the stories I love, while my eyes rest. I listen in my car, shopping, walking, or sitting on my porch. Anytime I need a break I have my stories. I love audiobooks!
  4. Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format? Amy nails the tense moments. She reads with the passion and intensity that those scenes need and makes the words jump off the pages with emotion. People can’t always read what the author feels but a good narrator helps translate those feelings.
  5. If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go? Obviously, as a romantic suspense time travel author, I love the concept! I would use the power in a heartbeat. I’m not sure what I’d choose as my first destination…and yet, in a sense, I’ve already experienced a time slip with each of my novels. I hope everyone feels that way when they listen to or read my books…after all, that’s the point.
  6. In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series? I love a series. They give me a chance to revisit characters and places I already love and, as an author, a series reconnects me to readers who loved my stories. A stand-alone is easier. One and done. In a series, you have to find a way to bring your readers up to speed without dumping too much backstory on them. But a series, to me, is more rewarding. I try to make all of my series stories stand-alone, but I make sure some of the previous characters visit in smaller roles.
  7. What’s your favorite:
    1. Food: Lobster
    2. Song: Everlasting Love
    3. Book: Knight In Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux
    4. Television: show Outlander
    5. Movie: Déjà Vu
    6. Band: Anything Motown
    7. Sports: team Atlanta Braves [pro] Georgia Bulldogs [college]
    8. City: Ashville N.C. or Charleston S.C.
  8. Are any of those things referenced in appearance in your work? I was inspired by Outlander and Déjà Vu but they aren’t refrenced in my writing.
  9. What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors? Learn from those who have walked the path before you, and never give up on your dreams.
  10. What’s next for you? My current WIP is a romantic political thriller, Reign Of Fire, which is the first in my Deep State Mysteries series, and I’m also working on a new supernatural romance series, Ghosts Of Lake Lanier.

Interview A.J. Wharton Author of Rebirth

Give a warm welcome to A.J. Wharton, author of Rebirth, released April 15th, 2018!

Pull up a chair, grab a drink of your choice from the cooler, a Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate, and let’s find out a little about A.J. and her new release Rebirth, book one of the Birds of Change.

What defines you as an author? As a person? Are they one in the same? That’s a really tough question, I’d say I’m defined by my experiences and relationships. I pull a lot of what I create from those around me, and I try and focus it and sculpt it into something enjoyable for my audience.

What inspired this particular story?

I had a lot of inspiration when writing this particular story, I had dreams for several weeks outlining the events in the book. After awhile it became hard to think of anything else, and I sought an outlet to express the ideas that I was having. I find I draw a lot of references and imagery from current sci fi and anime tv shows. Heavens lost Property being my favorite.

What secret do you use to blast through writer’s block?

When I’m stuck in a certain section I will attempt to write what is happening in someone else’s POV. Actually, some of the scenes I wrote trying to get through the writers block ended up in the final manuscript.

What inspired you to write?

For my day job I travel for long hours and I find comfort in audiobooks. One author really stuck out to me and I fell in love with her style (Susan Illene). After completing the sensor series, I felt more capable of really voicing what I wanted to relay to the audience in book format.

How long have you been writing?

Off and on for several years, this book would make my first completed manuscript though.

Did you tell friends and family that you were writing a book? Or did it take a while to come out and tell friends and family you were a writer?

I did, and they couldn’t be more proud. My father is spreading the word with everyone he knows. I first mentioned it off handedly and surprised them. I have been so passionate about this book that I tend to not shut up about it.

Do you see yourself in your characters?

Not really, I mean there are parts of each character that will correspond to how I’d act or react. If I had to pick one I saw the most of myself I’d say Korarina.

What do you want your readers to take away from your books?

I feel that Rebirth really conveys a lot of strong feelings about self-identity. Its important to know who you are, to feel comfortable in your own skin. There are several moments when people are thought less of because they are unique. It’s important to remember that being unique is one of the best things someone can be.

Where do your story ideas come from? If they come to you in the middle of the night, do you get up and write them all down?

Mainly in the form of dreams, and yes sometimes I write them down. Other times I will blurt them own to my partner who will contribute thoughts on it.

Do you find it easier to write from a male or female point of view? Why?

No not really, I find when I’m really thinking about what the character would do its more about personality than gender.

Why do you write what you write?  Contemporary, paranormal,  suspense, etc.

I write what I write because the paranormal has always fascinated me. Along with Mythology, there is always a different avenue to explore with all the possible variations of creatures and beings out there.
If writing is your first passion, what is your second?

I am definitely passionate about writing, for a while I would have said my first passion was photography, but I think writing has taken its place as number 1.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I play a lot of video games on my PlayStation or I watch any one of a number of sci fi or anime’s.
My usual go to for television would either be Dragon Ball Super, Heavens Lost Property, or Seven Deadly Sins. For games I’m currently playing the 2nd Tomb Raider in the reboot series.

You’ve got a time machine, a cloak of invisibility, and one hour. Where would you go, and what eavesdropping would you do?

I’d go to the future, probably at least 100 to 200 years. Learn about some of the most popular technology or stock trends, and when I get back I’d invest in profitable endeavors.

 I hear that!

Tell us a little about Rebirth.
 What’s your talent?
In a world divided between those who are talented and those who aren’t, Vici is a city governed by an egotistical Praetor driven by his hatred for the gifted individuals—the Tallents—who he considers a plague. Tallents are forced into the shadows, for fear that they will be caught and executed.
An explosion rocks the city to its very foundation; the sole survivor a young woman with no memories of her past. Her only tie to her previous life is a silver necklace with the name Asylia inscribed. Risen from the ashes, she pieces herself together while taking control of her emerging fire talent. She must be careful; one mistake and she will end up like all the other Tallents who have faced the Praetor’s wrath.
Harbored by a mysterious group called Revival, the young woman discovers that the people of Vici are disappearing at an alarming rate. Together with her new friends, she must rally against the Praetor’s tyranny, racing to free the city in hopes that she isn’t too late to bring peace to this world in turmoil.
You can find Rebirth at:

A peek between the pages of Rebirth.

A rustling chain nearby; my body feels weak and heavy as the darkness surrounds me. Cold numbness fills my body. The razor-sharp wind cascades past my face. A shattering noise wakes me up to the icy wind whipping across my body. The current turns me over and over as if I’m a mere plaything for the air around me. My eyes spring open and struggle against the oncoming current. I am high in the air above the city. Beneath me, bright lights of buildings stretch as far as I can see. I panic as I fall faster and faster toward the ground.

“Aaaaaaahhhhhh!”

A bright light emanates from behind me and lights up the night sky as the pulse of power fuels an explosion above me. I twist and turn as I rocket toward the ground. Something is attached to me and squirming to get out of my reach. Got to hold on; got to hold on just a little longer. A black, crumpled mass tears from my body, its claws ripping at my flesh as it disappears above me. My body rocks from it, picking up pace as my arms flail around, helpless against the downward pull of gravity. Beneath me, I recognize the building as the one they had shown when Praetor Fraus delivered his announcement. It isn’t how I remembered seeing it though. When I last saw it, it was charred and broken, but this building looks pristine. The city fills my vision as I soar closer and closer. Brilliant glistening buildings formed almost a perfect circle: the edge of the city outlined by crystalline magenta walls.

A mangled voice comes from behind me, but the wind makes it hard to make out what it is saying. I see through the glass ceiling of the building and I try to change my path, but I burst through the glass as fire surrounds me.

About the Author:

Angela lives in the small capital of Delaware. An avid gamer and superhero fan, she spends most of her free time playing video games. With her work, she travels for hours at a time and that’s where she discovered her love for audiobooks. Angela would get wrapped up in the story, and the fantasy that came alive all around her made the miles fly by. After being inspired by Susan Ilene’s Sensor series, she was motivated to write her first book. Angela dreamed about the events in the books for weeks before she finally started writing them down. Rebirth is Angela’s debut novel, but first of many in a series.
