Interview – Annunciata Doyle of Caper Magic, by Veronica Lynch
Give a warm welcome to Veronica Lynch, author of Caper Magic a Halloween tale. Veronica, I see you’ve brought someone with you.
Yes, Tena I have, this is Annunciata Doyle from Caper Magic!
Fantastic! I love a Halloween story. Pull up a chair, grab a
drink of your choice from the cauldron, a Bat Wing Chocolate Chip, Pumpkin or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate. I see you have a small Halloween cosmetics bag for one lucky person who leaves a comment. Wonderful. I love those!
Lets start with Annunciata.
Who are you really? I am a simple woman trying to survive as best I can. In the summers, I live in Cape Brendan, a pretty tourist town in the 1,000 Islands Region of New York. When it turns cold as Mother Superior’s heart, I travel to warmer climes on modeling gigs for my employer at La Vrai Beaute.
Who were the biggest role models in your life? I suppose it was the nuns who raised me in one of the Magdelene Laundries in Tuam Ireland. I was sent there at age 13 after my grandparents could no longer control me. I was what we called in those days, incorrigible.
What kind of man do you want to spend the rest of your life with? Me? The one they call the Black Mamba and a man? I should say not–and fer good reason. After all, I’ve buried four husbands or about to be husbands in me lifetime. What man not completely off his nutter want with the likes of me? I wouldn’t mind a bit of romance, mind ye. But word always gets around and the ones with half a functioning brain run like the devil was on their tails.
What kind of man would you never choose? A simpering git like Nicholas Forrester, that’s who. Listens to no one but himself. Thinks he knows it all; when he really knows nothing about the scheme of things, I’m tellin’ ye.
What is most important to you in life? Ensuring the women and children who are entrusted to me care get to the next station on their journeys, safe and sound.
What is your biggest fear? That loose lips will sink ships and the station will be shut down. Worse, the coppers will find the woman and her children, then return them to the abuser. That terrifies me.
Thanks so much Annunciate! Now Veronica, I have a few questions for you!
Tell us a little about writing this story. The hubs and I had been vacationing each August in what is called “The Islands”, meaning the Thousand Islands chain in the Saint Lawrence River which stretches from the far east end of Lake Ontario to the Atlantic Ocean. One of my favorite places is a small town called Cape Vincent which is known for ship building and its involvement with 3 wars: French and Indian, Revolutionary and the War of 1812. A ferry, which makes a hideous noise when it arrives and departs, transports tourists back and forth to Canada maybe six to eight times a day. As I stood on the pier one day, I envisioned a woman and her children standing on the back of the ferry, waving goodbye to someone. My mind took the next logical step. What if the ‘someone’ had just helped them escape an abusive husband and father? Bingo bango, Caper Magic was born.
Was it fun? Tons. The ‘real’ town has a huge celebration each July, called the French Fest. People dress in period costumes; there is a parade and a two day arts and crafts faire that covers the town square. Later in the summer there is something called Pirates Week. Legend has it Napoleon’s brother bought land to build a house for the deposed Emperor to live in after he left Saint Elba. I decided to give my town an Irish name with Irish sailors as its founders and keep ship building as the background. The part about celebrating Halloween all thirty-one days of October, and calling it Caper Madness, kind of fell in place. The precision drill team dressed as witches carrying brooms instead of rifles and the ghouls playing music in the park every day was a stroke of brilliance if I do say so. And, Mel’s Diner really does exist–sort of. hat part was the most fun–creating all the activities and attractions for the tourists.
Do your characters always act as you expect? For the most part, yes. I’m the one who has control of the Delete key after all.
Are you a plotter or a pantser? A bit of both but I always have a plot basis and character profiles down on paper before I begin. It’s those secondary intruders who stick their sticky fingers in things and try to screw things up. Again, I’m not afraid to hit Delete. Or kill one off. I like killing people. I once had a critique partner tell me she’d never speak to me again if I killed off one of the secondary characters in my first book. I let the SOB live. And she’s still my critique partner.
Speed Round- I love to give an author a topic and require a one word answer. Though sometimes they cheat. LOL

Tell us a little about Caper Magic.
P.I. Nick Forrester arrives in Cape Brendan ostensibly to assist with Caper Madness, a month long celebration of everything Halloween. In reality he is tracking a woman on the run with her children. Within days he is confronted by Annunciata Doyle, a vivid reminder of a painful past.
After retreating to Cape Brendan in defeat and humiliation, Nunie Doyle’s only hope was to make the best of forced retirement. There, in this quaint tourist town on the shores Lake Ontario, she has earned the love and respect of new friends and neighbors—and now puts her talent for helping women children to good use.
With the mutual goal of making Caper Madness the best ever, Nick and Nunie fight tooth and nail on the personal level, while each discovers a new side to the other.
Sides that force both into making drastic changes for the rest of their lives.
This attraction: complete madness—or sheer magic?
How about a peek between the pages of Caper Magic?
Hank let out a holler just before a huge toothy grin spanned the borders of his gaunt cheeks. “Top o’ the marnin’ to ye, Missus!” he cackled to someone exiting the front door of the stone cottage next door.
Taking the concrete steps to the sidewalk in two lithe moves, a woman wearing a slinky dress the color of ripe tomatoes glanced their way and responded in a distinct Irish brogue. “And the ass end of the day to ye, Mistur Pierpont.”
Intrigued by richness of her voice, Nick craned his neck and found one of the witches from yesterday’s parade—minus the droopy velvet hat—passing within steps of Hank’s porch. A bulging garment bag hung over one arm; she looked headed in the direction of the pier at the end of Vincentian Lane. Damned if right then a wind didn’t jump up off the lake and mold the filmy length of scarlet against each curve of her body. Long black hair—and there seemed to be a good ten pounds of it—flowed over both shoulders, caressing her body like a lover as she marched toward Dingle Pier. While his heart bumped into a trip hammer beat, Nick reminded himself to breathe.
“Ferget yer broom, Missus?” Hank called out to her retreating back.
“In the repair shop,” she replied, winging that glorious mass of onyx colored hair away from lips that had been painted to match her dress. “Gettin’ fitted with a couple of those fancy turbo boosters, it is.”
“Turbo boosters,” Hank chuckled, then took another slurp of coffee. “That Nunie Doyle sure is a pistol.”
An invisible fist reached down to grab Nick’s gut in a vise. As recognition flared, long buried rage took a slow crawling path up his spine.
Five years had evoked more than a few changes in Annunciata Doyle. Much thinner, he noted. Back then, her weight was something she’d thrown around with ease—or when the mood suited. When it came to cops, it suited her often. The hair was another matter. Who knew when she freed the ruthlessly tight bun she’d always sported, her hair would fall past her waist in a curtain of black velvet?
In the costume of a Witchy Poo—and wasn’t that appropriate considering what she’d done to several of his fellow officers—her current manner of dress was a complete one-eighty and certainly more feminine than the severe straight-jacket type suits she wore back when reporters hung on her every word and judges clamored for her expert testimony during the sentencing portion of criminal trials. Counselors and advocates proclaimed her the patron saint of victims and survivors.
Which, in his opinion, was complete bullshit.
“You hear me, boy?”
“What? Sorry, Uncle Hank. I got—distracted.”
“Easy to do with that one. Be careful though.”
She took the first step leading into the gazebo. As she moved, the thigh high split on the dress opened to expose a slender silk covered leg. “Why is that?”
“Folks around here call her the Black Mamba. Dangerous for any man who shows much of an interest.”
No big secret there, Nick mused sourly.
The Crone his brother officers had called the Director of Crime Victim Services back then. A woman who proved herself fully capable of destroying a man’s career with one carefully placed phone call to the police brass—or worse—the local media. Or, as she accomplished with one blow, dropping a name during during a notorious child sex abuse trial.
The ensuing scandal ended badly for all concerned, including the loss of several careers and, in the case of Nick’s best friend and best friend, suicide.

About the Author:
Forced into the role of caretaker for her siblings and chronically ill parents at an early age, Veronica Lynch turned the things she learned into caring for her patients as a nurse in the OR and delivery room. Somewhere along the way, she fit survivors of sexual assault into the mix, then turned that history of care-taking into her writing. She now explores the world of the less-thans and the heroes who stand for them, then puts them into her books.

Interview with Silver Milan Author of Dragon’s First Rule
Give a warm welcome to Silver Milan, author of Dragon’s First Rule – Dragons of Midnight, Book One just released on October 1, 2107!
Pull up a chair, grab a drink of your choice from the cauldron, a Bat Wing Chocolate Chip, Pumpkin or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate, and let’s find out a little about Silver Milan and her Dragon’s First Rule.
Silver, what inspired this particular story?
I read a lot of paranormal romance and urban fantasy, and I love the genre. I asked myself, what can I write about that will stand out from all the other paranormal romance books out there? And I came up with the idea for a dragon king falling for a lion shifter who was also secretly a witch. Basically I wanted a woman who could hold her own against a king, so she couldn’t be a weak character, not in abilities, nor (most importantly) personality.
How long have you been writing?
I’ve been publishing under different pen names starting in early 2013 (really early, as in January 1!) and I’ve sold over 300,000 books since then. I gave up my day job in 2012 and never looked back. The first two and a half years were crazy lean financially, and I learned how to live on very little money.
It’s only in the past two years that I’ve started breaking out, and here I go deciding to start a new pen name again. I guess I want to prove to myself that I can do it again. Sort of like what Steven King did back in the 80s when he started his Richard Bachman pen name. I wonder if anyone will write in after reading books by Silver Milan and tell me they’ve figured out who I am from my voice 😉
Do you see yourself in your characters?
For sure… my thriftiness from my lean years shows through in a lot of my characters. They’ll save coupons, they’ll eat Kraft Mac and Cheese, they’ll rent out their homes and live in the basements…
Where do your story ideas come from? If they come to you in the middle of the night, do you get up and write them all down?
My story ideas come from a lot of places. Sometimes I’ll be at the gym working out and then an idea will hit me and I’ll quickly thumb type it into my phone. Or I’ll be lying awake in the middle of the night, thinking about my story or a problem I’m having with it, and then inspiration will strike and I’ll quickly turn on the bedside lamp and write down my idea on the notepad I keep on my nightstand for that very purpose! Of course it can be a bit tricky when the morning comes and I find myself trying to decipher the nearly-illegible handwriting penned by my half asleep self.
What do you like to do when you are not writing?
Lots of things. I’m a big fitness fan, so I’ll head to the gym, or jog or bike if the weather is good. Or I’ll pick up a good romance if it’s a rainy day. I’m also a bit of a foodie, and since I never was that great of a cook (unless you count Mac n’ Cheese, which I can make really well!!!), I like to support local mom and pop restaurants. Especially on the Italian side. Mmmm, pasta.
Tell us a little about Dragon’s First Rule.
A peek between the page of Dragon’s First Rule:
Ariel stared into the darkness. She could see a surprisingly good distance inside, thanks to her enhanced vision. Nothing stood out to her, and the terminus of the passage was lost to the murk. The darkness seemed welcoming, somehow.
It seemed safe to turn her back on the cave, and she did so, gazing out from the precipice to survey the valley in front of her. Ordinarily, she would have thought the wide, tree-filled expanse so beautiful. She loved nature and hiking. It was one of the reasons she had come out here in the first place.
But she felt nothing now, only emptiness. She wondered if she would ever be able to appreciate such beauty again, given what she had become.
She glanced at the cave once more. Again, she felt drawn to it, but she shook her head.
Not going inside.
Though she was incredibly upset, she didn’t have a death wish. There might be a bear or something sleeping inside. Or maybe a dragon, like that stupid sign had said. Wouldn’t surprise her anymore, not in the least: she was being hunted by lions who could become humans, after all. And she was one of those lions.
For now, all she wanted was to get away from those hunters. She would stay here for a few hours, long enough to be sure the animals had gone away. And then she would climb back down and get the hell out of here.
And what then? Well, she figured she would have to live out the rest of her days in the woods. It would be a solitary life, away from the technology that drove modern society. She would have to give up all her friends and family.
Maybe she could get a sat-phone or something, so she could still talk to her family occasionally. But she couldn’t return, at least not until she could get the beast inside of her under control. That was something she doubted would ever be possible. Then again, moments ago she had exerted her will on the lioness and prevented her from ripping out of her skin. That was something, at least. A reason to hope.
She sat down on the precipice and settled in for a long wait. She decided she would stay here until nightfall. That would be the best time to retreat, since her beast operated best in the dark.
But so do the other lions, she reminded herself.
Maybe that wasn’t such a good idea. Well, she’d sit here for a while, and make up her mind on what she wanted to do.
Maybe a minute passed before she heard a voice behind her. “Well hello.”
Ariel spun in fright; when she saw the man standing at the cave mouth, she momentarily forgot all fear, forgot where she was and how she got there, and instead simply stared, spellbound.
Standing in front of the cave entrance towered the most beautiful man she had ever seen. He had to be at least six and a half feet tall. He was too gorgeous to be a model. Too breathtaking to be a movie star. She got butterflies in her stomach just looking at him. Where to begin? His hair… oh yes, his hair. It was as if someone had taken several bars of gold and melted them down to form the bouncy curls that fell around that spectacular face. His eyes were a fiery gold like his hair, almost unnaturally so. They were almond-shaped and beguiling, shining with intelligence.
His broad, bold nose jutted aristocratically from his face, perfect in every way. The plump lips of his chiseled, sensuous mouth had such gorgeous curves—if any lips were created for kissing, it was those. He had a strong, aristocratic jaw that matched his nose, and blemish-free, smooth bronze skin.
His thickly corded neck disappeared into the collar of a black and gold dress shirt, whose sleeves were rolled back to the elbows, revealing his muscular forearms. Black and gold tribal dragons were tattooed from wrists to elbows on each arm. The shirt did little to conceal the outline of his wide, powerful shoulders, and the hard muscles of his pecs that pressed out from beneath the fabric. She could make out the lines of a six-pack.
A designer belt cinched his lean waist, and below that he wore dark-washed, fitted jeans. Her eyes lingered on his groin, where—
Ariel blinked as she realized the brazenness of what she was doing, and the spell broke. She quickly lifted her eyes back to his face.
The beautiful man’s lips were upturned in amusement.
She realized she was stark naked and quickly covered her breasts with one arm, twisting her torso away and covering her bum with her other hand. She kept her gaze on him, staring at him over one shoulder.
“What are you looking at?” she said.
“I’m looking at you,” he replied defiantly. She hadn’t noticed it when he spoke before, but even his voice was sexy as hell.
As she gazed at his haughty expression, the fear returned. Not of him, but for him.
“Are you one of them?” she said.
“One of who?” the man said, still smiling.
“You’re obviously not a backpacker or camper,” Ariel said. “You don’t find many people who dress like European fashionistas in the wilderness of the Midwest.”
“No, you don’t,” the man said hypnotically.
Then again, if he was one of the lion-men who pursued her, he would have been butt-naked, like her.
“Look, it’s been a rough few days,” she said. “I’m not in the mood for games.”
“You seem in surprisingly good spirits to me,” the man said.
She smiled fleetingly. “Call it a defense mechanism. Listen, if you’re not one of them, then you’re putting yourself at risk. I’m not someone you want to know. I have to get myself as far away from civilization as I can. Those lions did… something… to me. I could change at a moment’s notice. You could die.”
“Change?” he said.
She heard the distant roar of a lion echo from the valley below.
That triggered the beast, and the lioness in her clawed to get out. Clawed clawed clawed.
“I—” she said. But the words came out a growl. “Run,” she managed to finish.

Shadows of Ghosts by L.A. McGinnis

It’s a Halloween Spooktacular! Yep, I love Halloween. Now…give a warm welcome to L.A. McGinnis, author of Shadows of Ghosts released Today, October 4, 2017!
From the first time she picked up a book, L.A. was hooked. By the time she left elementary school, she’d read every volume in the C. H. Campbell library, forcing the poor librarian to order more bookshelves for Norse mythology. When she wasn’t running through the woods or rescuing animals, she could be found curled up in the backyard with a book, escaping to even greater adventures. But Laura always dreamed of the day when she’d tell the really, really big story, the tale of growing up in the American twentieth century. But between riding horses and driving fast cars, somehow her teenage years flashed by. Realizing that everyone has to grow up, she walked into a classroom at KSU and began studying Chaucer and Shakespeare and Old English, and once again fell in love with storytelling. Eventually, her creativity came full circle, and as she changed from artist to mother, the dream of the Great American Novel was put on hold by all the other things that big life demands. Then one day, in between rolling her eyes and ordering her son to complete the ten page report that was, of course, due the very next day, she had to stop for a moment when he challenged her, “Well, when was the last time you wrote ten pages?” So she wrote, badly at first, and then, to her delight, discovered that she loved it, perhaps even more than she had before. After pecking out a longer-than-life YA novel and a somewhat convoluted apocalyptic horror manuscript, she finally found a genre that she adored. And once the first draft was done, she thought, well, this really isn’t too bad. Not as bad as say, the convoluted apocalyptic horror story. After more edits than she can even count, she hopes you enjoy Shadows of Ghosts, the story of Logan and Ian. Laura is a graduate of Kent State University, and has been writing since 2007. She belongs to both the RWA and the NEORWA and has attended the annual Sanibel Island Writer’s Conferences, as well as the NEORWA Writer’s Conferences, and participates in their yearly writing retreat. You can find L.A. For over a hundred years, cynical Ian Grant swore to never love another woman. But from the first time he saw Logan, he knew an ancient part of his history had come back to haunt him, and the one thing he doesn’t want becomes the one thing he has to have.
Two irreconcilable lives, five hundred years of history, and all they have to do to live happily ever after is defeat the evil that threatens to tear them apart.
It was wonderful having you with us today. Please feel free to stop by anytime. Good Luck with Shadows of Ghosts.
