LM, what secret do you use to blast through writer’s block?
I usually move to a different project, one I’m working on only in my spare time, and play with that for a little bit. I’ll also think of the most cliché saying and try and build a few scenes around it. One of my earlier books started out that way, as a matter of fact—I was deep in writer’s block for another project and used the writing prompt to clear my mind, which resulted in another series. If either of those fail, I’ll put on my headphones and think it out.
Where do your story ideas come from? If they come to you in the middle of the night, do you get up and write them all down?
Sometimes they’re random thoughts—like the idea about a woman saving the world, which is the basis for the original Winged series. Others are the result of listening to songs and simply being struck with the idea that there’s another story to be told than what the lyricist told, which is the basis for another book I’m working on at the moment.
If writing is your first passion, what is your second?
I’d have to say reading, which is something I believe I share with a lot of writers. I’ve never understand writers who believe they can’t be readers, especially in their own genre. If you’re not reading, you’ve disconnected yourself from what readers want which, while it shouldn’t be the deciding factor in what you write, should always be something you keep in mind.
Do you find it easier to write from a male or female point of view? Why?
I think this depends on the story and the character. I’ve written both, sometimes in the same story, and I’ll no doubt do so again. Having said that, there are certain characters who will never be the first voice in something I write, simply because I think they’d lose some of their allure—for instance, Michael in the Winged series or Lilith in the same universe. I don’t think the ease of writing comes from the gender but from the characters themselves. Some people are simply easier to write than others.

“You’ll catch cold if you stay out here much longer.”
I didn’t turn around, continuing to study the skyline. “I’m fine.”
“It’s three in the morning. You should be asleep.” He didn’t sound angry about the fact I wasn’t or the fact I was standing outside in late September in sleep pants and a thin cotton tank. If anything, his scolding sounded as if it was for form and nothing else. “It’s been a long day for all of us.”
“Yes.” Now I did turn around, studying Barry with the same intensity I’d shown the various buildings of Prague. “Why are you mad at me?”
“I’m not mad.” He pulled a cigar from the pocket of his sleep pants but didn’t light it, staring at the tip for a moment before sliding it back in his pocket. “I’m tired, Julie. As I said, it’s been a long day. The next few days—weeks, rather—promise to be equally long. We all need to sleep, to keep our strength up for what lies ahead.”
“You haven’t touched me since we got back.” Since he stood in front of my sister and ripped her heart out and then walked away without a backward glance. “You’ve barely said anything all night long.”
“As I said, I’m tired.” He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a long sigh. “There’s been quite a bit of upheaval in the last thirty-six hours or so. Quite a bit. Forgive me if I’m not my usual charming self. You have more than enough people here to pay you attention if you’re feeling uncared for.”
“That’s not what I meant.” I turned back to the city view, widening my eyes and blinking rapidly in an effort to keep the tears at bay. I didn’t have a problem with using tears as a weapon when they were called for but I wouldn’t use them with him, ever. “You’re right. It’s late. Go to sleep. I’m fine.”
“We both know I’m not going to sleep until you do.” I heard the sound of metal scraping over concrete and glanced over my shoulder to find he’d pulled one of the patio chairs free of the table. Sitting down and stretching out his legs, he said, “As long as you’re here, I’m here.”
“Barry—.”
“Arguing will only frustrate us both, Julie Elizabeth, and we’ve had enough frustration for the day.” He slid further down in the seat, almost slouching, and crossed his arms. “As long as you’re here, I’m here.”
“But do you want to be here?” The question tumbled out before I even realized it was in my mind and I bit my tongue, already regretting it. “Never mind. You don’t have to answer that.”
“Come here.” When I didn’t move, he uncrossed his arms and held out one hand. “Please.”
Crossing the balcony, I took his hand, curling up in his lap and resting my head on his shoulder. We sat in silence for a few minutes before he cleared his throat. “I don’t know any other way to say it. I can simply say as long as you’re here, I’m here. When you want to leave, we’ll leave.”
“And where would we go?” Joanne’s face in the instant after Barry verbally sucker punched her, Asmodeus’s face the second after I shot him, flashed through my mind and I hunched my shoulders as if the memory carried a physical blow. “There’s no place left. We burned all those bridges today.”
“The thing about bridges is they can always be rebuilt and when they are, they’re stronger than before they burned.” He brushed my hair away from my face, stroking one hand down my back and pulling me tighter against him. “But since you don’t want to leave, the discussion is moot.”
“We’re doing the right thing.”
“The right thing done the wrong way is no longer the right thing.”
“If there was a way to do this differently, we would have taken it.” We’d tried to take it. We’d tried to meet the others halfway. Nobody—Lilith, Asmodeus, the Power, Morning Star—wanted to bend.
So we would have to break them.
“After the raids begin today, there is no turning back. You and your supporters will be branded traitors. There will be bounties on your heads.” He pressed his lips to my hair, breathing deep. “On all our heads. You’ve never lived through a war.”
It wasn’t a question but I answered anyway. “No, I haven’t.”
“I’ve been through more than my fair share, even considering my age. When it’s impossible to die from manmade weapons, you tend to fight in wars simply to alleviate the boredom.” He turned, pressing his face in to my hair. “And they’re nothing compared to supernatural wars. So far you’ve only seen the pretty side of Hell. There are things which will be unleashed which should never exist out of nightmares.”
“On us or by us?”
“Both.” His hand shook as he stroked my back and I wasn’t sure if he was trying to comfort me or himself. “Some things can’t be unseen or unfelt. You’ll carry it with you until the day you die.”
“Are you trying to scare me?”
“I’m trying to warn you. Up until now, everything about this war has been theoretical. Until today, no true shots were fired.” He drew back, his face unnaturally somber, even for him. “I know you did what you had to do and I don’t fault you for that decision.”
“But I officially started the war.” I nodded. “I know. I’ll live with it.”
“Things will get worse.” He pressed a kiss to my forehead. “They always do.”
“And then they get better.” I had to believe that. If I didn’t, then there was a good chance I was wrecking and ruining lives for no reason at all. I pressed my lips to his, lightly, for comfort more than anything else. “Things will be better. We’re going to make them better.”
We didn’t have any other choice.

Interview Trish Arcangelo Author of Hard Miles

What inspired this particular story?
Two of the scenes popped into my head at different times and I wrote the story around those. The first was the robbery scene at the beginning of the book, and Laurel’s back story grew from there (why was she there, where was she going, etc). The second is the cemetery scene later in the book which is how Jase’s reclusive character was born. I decided he would be the one to save Laurel and everything bloomed from there!
What secret do you use to blast through writer’s block?
If anyone has a secret weapon that neutralizes writer’s block I’m all ears! I actually haven’t found a cure for it yet, sometimes I stall for weeks at a time as to where to go next in a story. When that happens I have to just take a break and not think about it for a bit. Where to go next in the story will eventually come to me. But each time I’m always terrified that it won’t and I have no control over how long it takes. But it’s all part of my process J
Do you find it easier to write from a male or female point of view? Why?
Definitely the female since I have a quite a bit of experience with that! 😉 In fact, writing male POV can sometimes be stressful, I want to make sure I get it right, that the character behave the way a man would instead of letting my own female voice creep in there. In my second book, Breakout, I wrote entirely from the female character’s POV, mainly because I wanted the hero to remain somewhat of a mystery. It depends on the story though, sometimes one POV works but other times it is crucial to see inside both main characters and discover what motivates them.
What inspired you to write?
My inspiration is the idea that a reader might connect with one of my stories the way I have with so many over the years. I’ve been obsessed with romance fiction since I was a teenager. Sometimes there is nothing better than sitting down and escaping into the pages of a great love story, connecting with characters and places I’ll never know. Throughout my life I’ve read so many truly amazing books and I often wondered what it would be like to write my own. The dream never left me but I just didn’t feel like I had what it took. I dabbled in my twenties but put the dream on the shelf for probably a decade or more, until I finally decided it would never leave me alone unless I really tried. So I did. I finished my first book about four years ago and was lucky enough to have it published in 2015. Now I can’t imagine not writing
A Peek between the pages of Hard Miles:
She walked toward him then, with purpose. Once she was standing directly in front of him, so close that he couldn’t pretend to ignore her, she’d said, “Just go with it.”
Laurel intended to kiss him then. He knew it. She was going to kiss him in front of everyone, a declaration. It would have been an act of kindness, her falling on the sword of a debt she thought she owed. The thought made him sick. He didn’t want her kisses of pity. He wanted her to kiss him because she was driven to, because she was mad for him. And though he’d do it again, even now he kicked himself for stopping that kiss. If pity was the price of admission to another taste of those lips, maybe it would have been worth it.
But he stopped her. He put a hand out to halt her and then led her toward the storeroom, his hand on the small of her back like a brand. Warmth pooled in his dick from just that small touch. As soon as the door to the storeroom snapped closed behind them Jase whirled her around until her back flattened against the brick wall, snarling. “What game are you playing?”
Her eyes went wide and the stunned look on her face almost had him apologizing, almost had him begging to try the kiss again. “No games,” she whispered.
He slammed his hands against the wall on either side of her head. “Defending me at every turn, as if you’ve been made my personal savior. I don’t need any paybacks for the gas station. We’ve been over this.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Oh? Then what the hell was that little performance out there?”
Laurel’s expression turned angry. God, she was even hotter when fiery and indignant. Jase was careful not to press too close so he could hide his raging erection.
She said, “Fine, I was just trying to help, you ungrateful—”
His stomach and his erection fell. “You what?”
The answering look on her face said she realized her mistake.
“So it was pity?” He spat, shoving away from her.
“That’s not what I meant, Jase.”
He pulled her to him again, unable to decide what he wanted. “Isn’t it? Well, then, by all means, baby, pity me.” And then he covered her lips with his.

My hero, Prince Randroth, is my favorite because who doesn’t want their very own fairy tale prince? Idgmet, Randroth’s squire, is my least favorite. Aside from his role in the story, the man wears one-piece purple suits and has silver fingernails. Enough said.
Traci Douglass—“A Dream to Build a Kiss On”
I just love Adam, my android hero. He’s so innocent, yet brimming with all these facts and figures and technology. He’s been given a synthetic soul and feels emotions just as strongly as humans, sometimes more so. I think Doctor Jillian Lewis is the perfect heroine for him. She’s world-weary and reclusive, she’s seen too much and been hurt too badly. Sparks definitely fly when they too get together (no pun intended). Honestly, I love all my characters. ☺
A.E. Hayes—“Tristan’s Tryst”
Lynx is, by far, my favorite, as she was the most fun to construct. When she took on a life of her own, I was amused and pleased by what she did with it. But I don’t think I have a least favorite. I’m fond of all three characters in this work, no matter their flaws, concerns, and hang-ups.
Serena Jayne—“You Only Love Once”
Ivy is my favorite character. She’s damaged both physically and emotionally. I want to give her a big hug, but I did something even better. I gave her a happy ever after. My least favorite character is the evil lady from Human Resources. She’s an antagonist to Ivy. I imagine that she hates her job and takes it out on everyone she encounters. I didn’t give her a name on purpose. I wanted the reader to picture someone who always gives them a hard time.
L.J. Longo—“Breathless”
I love both my guys. Mott is very fun to write because he’s so scared of interacting with people, but such a bad-ass in every other way. Tainjin is bright and cheerful but hiding these really interesting dark places. I think my favorite character was probably the roaches. It’s been fun researching insect and proto-life behavior and running wild with my own floating psychic monsters.
Oriana Maret—“Renewal”
I love all my characters—even the antagonists. There are four primary characters in “Renewal,” and of course I adore Kestrel and Mercer. But I’m deeply interested in Theodosia because of her conflict. No problem is ever black and white, but sprinkled with nuances of gray, and her decisions are driven by these shades of gray.
Cara McKinnon—“The Pirates and the Pacifist”
Sameer is my favorite character. He’s the pirate captain, and an enigmatic but charismatic figure. Kai is drawn to him immediately despite being a captive, and when their roles are quickly reversed and Sam needs Kai’s help, it’s a chance for me to reveal some of the aching vulnerabilities beneath his dominant and forceful exterior. I don’t really have a least favorite character in this story. They were all fun to write.
Sheri Queen—“Red Sand”
I like all my characters. Each of them brings something different to the story. Coz is the analytical Android who brings Thayne and Bria together. I love his character.
Mary Rogers—“Breakfast on Pluto”
My fav is always the character in love, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s is a fav.
Emmerite Sundberg—“Fluid”
So I write lonely fiction. Iyonne and Sissiasandra are my only characters. I love them both. My least favorite character, though not really appearing “on screen” are the people who messed up Sissiasandra’s life so much, even though it wasn’t intentional on their part.
K.W. Taylor—“Reprogramming”
I usually write novels, and writing a short story after a hiatus from the form was challenging, as I love slow-burn character development. Still, Jean was really fun to write, trying to decide how his AI worked and how he would react to things. Conversely, I find villains hard to write, so you don’t see a ton of my antagonist on the page. If I do write something longer in this world, perhaps I’ll try to make him a bit more three-dimensional.

She studied English and Writing at Hood College, where she earned her B.A., and later studied Fiction Writing at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. A.E. resides in Maryland with her husband and son, and when she isn’t writing or singing (or doing both at the same time), she spends her time drinking far too much coffee, logging miles by pacing around the living room floor in order to make her Fitbit happy, studying the violin, pretending to be a Cylon, and plotting ideas for several new projects (which usually happens during her living room pacing time).
