Favorite Poems, Short Stories, or Novellas #L&SR’s #Wednesday’s Blog Challenge

Welcome to #L&SR’s #Wednesday’s Blog Challenge 6-10-20 –  Favorite poems, short stories, or novellas.  Wow this one is easy. so many to choose from. Please have a seat, grab an iced tea or lemonade out of the cooler. Be sure and try a chocolate chip or peanut butter cookie. Lets get started with Favorite poems, short stories, or novellas.

This weeks topic is another another slam dunk. First let me say up front, I’m not really a poem or short story type of gal.  Novellas, I can get into.

Novellas Deerbourne Inn Series is a great small town series written by multiple authors at The Wild Rose Press. There are a number of them and each unique but set in the small town of Willow Springs, Vermont. Whether you love to read Contemporary Romance, Mystery, Time Travel, Historical, Thriller, or SyFy,  You can’t go wrong with these novellas.

I would be amiss if I didn’t mention my novella it’s part of the Deerbourne Inn Series. Mystic Maples.   I had a blast writing this book. A bit of time-travel, mystery, and magic is the small town of Willow Springs makes for a fun romantic adventure and an escape for the reader. A captivating furbaby by the name of Rag-A-Muffin steals the story.  Earth/Fire witch, Mercy’s insatiable curiosity finds her trespassing under a full moon on enchanted land. The owner discovers her and sparks fly, both figuratively and physically. If you look close at the cover, you’ll see that Mercy has one blue and one green eye, just like my character. Sil, the hero is absolutely swoon-worthy, don’t you think? Silvanus is not without his secrets. His gypsy/fae blood has always been a thorn in his side. But when Mercy discovers his secrets, his  well-ordered life unravels and they’re catapulted into the past to right a wrong. What fun!!

NovellasOne Scoop or Two Series  –  Another summer series written by multiple authors at The Wild Rose Press. Summer fun, ice cream and delectable tales written in a variety of genres. A few of my favorites are:

Devil’s Food Ripple with a Cherry on Top -Fenady Clark’s dream of owning an ice cream parlor has inspired her through some of life’s hardest challenges. Just when the grand opening’s within reach, that wicked rogue, Sebastian Bane, opens shop and starts serving Fenady’s designer flavors, all renamed. She suspects he’s using black magic to poach her recipes, and if she weren’t a good witch instead of a bad witch, she’d whip up a spell and retaliate.
Sebastian’s come all the way from England to establish his family’s business near Salem. He can’t explain how he and the lovely Fenady keep creating the same ice cream confections, unless it’s enchantment, or fate. Is there room in town for both their dreams? And what will it take to convince an angry white witch she needs him in her life?

Vanilla with a Twist – Tandy Blakemore spends her days running her New England ice cream parlor, single-parenting her teenage son, and trying to keep her head above financial water.
Engineer Deacon Withers is on an enforced vacation in the tiny seaside town of Beacher’s Cove. Overworked, stressed, and lonely, he walks into Tandy’s shop for a midday ice cream cone and gets embroiled in helping her fix a broken piece of equipment. Can the budding friendship that follows lead to something everlasting?

Root Brew Float – Josephine Brevil has lived hundreds of years haunted by the horrors she experienced during the Salem Witch Trials. She takes great care to hide her powers, though serving a Root Brew Float laced with a magic potion now and again never hurt anybody. The Order sends her to Massachusetts to deal with a paranormal threat, and she meets the young and handsome widower, Clarence Watts. However, being with him comes with a choice. How can she choose between the man she loves and the magic she holds dear?

One Scoop or Two is a new series and new novellas are being added each week. Now to be fair, I’ve read all of the ones released, yet.  But I am working on them.  Pssst… I have a novella in this series too, but it’s still in edits. So watch for Chocolate Raspberry Magic coming by end of summer, fingers crossed.

**This may not count as poems, but I just remembered the Dr. Seuss books of my youth.  I loved those books and their rhymes, didn’t you?

So there you have it, favorite poems, short stories, or novellas. Do you have favorite poems, short stories, or novellas?  I’d love to hear from you.  Please list them in the comments below.

Alas, I must return to my writing cave  where deadlines loom with edits on my upcoming release HIDDEN GYPSY MAGIC, Chocolate Raspberry Magic, and on a new WIP sixth book in A Demon’s Witch Series(very exciting and coming along very well) so let’s see what other authors list as their favorite poems, short stories, or novellasL&SR

A little more about Mystic Maples!

“Don’t touch that,” he barked. It was too late.

Her fingers stroked the rusted padlock. It sprang open. Puffs of dried soil sprinkled the carpet around the chest. He placed a restraining hand on her arm just as she tentatively dug her fingers into the soil.  “This isn’t from your land. It’s —.”  A swirl of colors sucked them in and a feeling of weightlessness surrounded her. She grabbed a hold of Sil’s arm. Then suddenly they were back inside the wagon.

Only something was amiss, the silence, the earthy smell wasn’t right. She shivered. What have I done? Taking a deep breath, she whirled around to face Sil.

“What the hell just happened?”

He shrugged. “You promised not to touch a thing. Lets get out of here.”  Reaching for the vardo’s handle, he pushed down and the door opened into a small barn. He strode to the door, tugging Mercy along with him. When he shoved it open moonlight  spread across an open field casting silvery shadows through the bordering trees. Off in the distance stood a  ramshackle cabin.

A warm breeze swept her hair across her face. She stared unblinking. Nothing about the landscape was familiar except the stands of young trees. She bent as if to touch the soil.

His arm flew out and prevented her from reaching the ground. “Its true,” he murmured surveying the area. His lips set in a thin line, he rubbed his temples and stared. Mocking her. “I won’t touch a thing. Well… you did and now… we are not when we were.”

“Now what?” she whispered.

He sucked in a breath. With his hand at the small of her back, he urged her up the stairs of the vardo.”I think we better go back inside and talk.”

How MYSTIC MAPLES began:

Earth/Fire witch Mercy Rose’s insatiable curiosity always gets her in trouble. After a break-in at her Colorado flower shop, and a court battle that comes to a screeching halt in her favor, she arrives at Deerbourne Inn for a much-needed getaway. Looking for peace and quiet, she finds just the opposite in a startling handsome but mysterious man and his dog.

Silvanus Forrest’s gypsy/fae heritage is a double-edged sword. The land he inherited from his parents is rumored to be enchanted. But when Mercy discovers the truth, his well-ordered life unravels, and they’re catapulted into the past to right a wrong. Along the way their lives intertwine, and they discover the true meaning of family and love. Will they change the past in time to save their future?

A peek between the pages of  MYSTIC MAPLES:

It was a beautiful summer evening lit by a full moon. What harm could come from simply popping over to Mystic Maples, digging my toes into the earth and see if there is any truth to the rumors? She shrugged. Sis wouldn’t have told me about it, if she hadn’t thought it worth investigating. Right?

She toed off her shoes, pulled off her socks and straightened. With a snap of her fingers she left the room without a sound and landed smack dab at the edge of the maple trees. Glancing around, she could see the house in the distance and the outline of the sign. “Good, I’m in the right place.”  She wandered farther in among the trees, the dirt beneath her feet was cool. Wiggling her toes deeper into the earth, she felt the warmth of the day and something else—a connection.

Several trees had a slight glow to them, then it was gone. Am I imagining…She raised her arms out from her sides and turned her face to the starlit sky letting the magic surge through her.  It had been almost a year since magic of any kind called to her. It felt so good, she was lost in the moment.

Suddenly a male voice broke through her revelry. “What are you doing here?”

Her heart thundered in her chest. She hadn’t heard a sound. Yet, there he was standing not three feet from her, hands on hips, and glaring at her.

Earth Day 2020 – Climate Action – Fun Facts

Ever wonder how Earth Day got started?  We all know I have an insatiable curiosity that has been known to get me into trouble along with my overactive imagination. So of course, I did some digging and this is what I discovered on the eve of Earth Day:

Earth Day - Hands holding the earth

In 1963 Senator Gaylord Nelson arrived in Washington looking to make a fledgling conservation movement. The idea sparked by Rachel Carson’s New York Times Bestseller Silent Spring. The book which warned against the harmful effects of widespread pesticide usage.

Did you know that in 1963 Gaylord Nelson proposed a “conservation tour” to then Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and Arthur Schlesinger, a member of President Kennedy’s cabinet? Ultimately, the tense nuclear situation with the Soviet Union became the focus rather than environmental issues.

Senator Nelson didn’t give up. After he witnessed the aftermath of an oil spill in California in 1969,  he doubled his efforts to raising environmental awareness enlisting support from both sides of the political spectrum.

Did you know Earth Day was inspired by Vietnam war protesters?  The date April 22nd  was chosen to appeal to college students intentionally by Senator Nelson and grad student Denis Hayes (who went on to internationalize the holiday and start the Earth Day Network, among other foundations). They strategically selected April 22 in order to attract more college students, who were known for being politically active during that era of protest. The date fell between spring break and final exams.

A strange combination of boisterous rallies and sober reflection on the state of the planet marked the first Earth Day.  Twenty Million Americans took to the street to celebrate.

Just eight months after the first Earth Day, the Environmental Protection Agency was born, approved by Richard Nixon.

In 2009 the holiday became internationally known as Mother Earth Day. That same year during the Apollo 14 moon mission, Astronaunt Stuart Rossa, a former smokejumper for the U.S. Forest Service, brought with him hundreds of tree seeds including Loblolly Pine, Sycamore, Sweetgum, Redwood, and Douglas Fir. Upon their return to earth, these trees were planted around National Monuments, as well as in sites all over the world. After decades of growing side-by-side with their Earth cousins, the Moon Trees showed no differences. On Earth Day 2009, NASA, in partnership with the United States National Arboretum and American Forests, planted a second generation Moon Sycamore on the arboretum’s grounds in Washington, D.C.

50th Anniversary 2020 Earth DayEvery year since 2016, there has been a new theme attached to the holiday. In anticipation for its 50th anniversary in 2020 the theme is “Climate Action”.  Despite the social distancing necessitated by the coronavirus pandemic, demonstrations and conferences are still happening virtually rather than in person. To learn more, visit Earth Day 2020 website.

Check out nine ways to celebrate Earth Day everyday.

Have a Happy Earth Day tomorrow. I’ll be planting a tree as I have for years, what will you be doing?

For fun – check out a fantasy alternative tale of the enchanted earth. Mystic Maples.
