Witches of Vegas by Mark Rosendorf

Give a warm welcome to Maak Rosendorf, author of Witches of Vegas. Pull up a chair, grab a drink of your choice from the cooler, a Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate, and let’s find out what inspired his YA novel, Witches of Vegas from Mark,  a magician himself.

One night, around two in the morning, a thought ran through my head: Imagine if you were a witch, where could you actively practice your magic without being discovered? We know discovery would lead to fear, maybe mass panic and that would lead to persecution, or worse. The best thing a witch can do keep their wiccan powers hidden, But, if you can’t ever use your power, are you still a witch?

Suddenly, the answer popped into my head. What if a witch, or a family of witches, decided to become magicians? Their show would certainly be amazing. They could use their powers on stage and perform the types of miracles we are used to seeing whenever we attend a magic show. The question most people in the audience ask is, “how did they do that?” For all we know, could it be witchcraft? No one ever questions it because magic is a common thing. People know they’re being fooled and that’s okay, it’s part of the show.

I spent years as a magician during my college years. Today, as a high school guidance counselor for special needs students, I teach magic as part of our performing arts program. Based on this, I understand how much work goes into magic. To master these illusions, magicians need time, focus and lots of practice to make it look real and natural. When a magician makes a card disappear right in front of your face, that took years of mastering the skills of card manipulation. When a magician makes furniture float in the air, that was knowledge and ingenuity, not to mention some serious money (many of these high-end illusions, whether bought or built, are expensive). But, if I told you it was done with witchcraft, could you tell the difference?

When magicians perform these illusions on stage, to the audience they look like miracles happening right in front of their eyes. They have no idea how it happens, for all they know, the magician has amazing supernatural powers. What a great cover that would be for actual witches who want to hide in plain sight. This was the thought that ran through my head which led to The Witches of Vegas being born.

Witches performing on stage as magicians…it would be great for them as they wouldn’t need to spend thousands of dollars to make a car float in the air, not when they can just say a magic spell and turn a motorized vehicle, or even themselves, “lighter than air.” No heavy cables that are nearly invisible to the naked eye. No gimmicks and tricks that need to be built from scratch and hidden from the audience. They could just make it happen through sheer willpower. Without such expensive costs to their show, they could charge super cheap prices for tickets and still put on the most amazing magic show ever created.

In Las Vegas, they’d blend in well since magic is as popular there as gambling and buffets. It’s great for the witches because they get to practice their power while being cheered as opposed to feared and hunted. It’s great for the audience as they get an unbelievable magic show for amazingly cheap prices. So, who could this possibly hurt? Oh, right, all the Vegas magicians who couldn’t possibly compete with their show.

The Witches of Vegas revolves around two fifteen-year olds who have lived unusual lives. Isis Rivera was a girl without a family. At the age of nine, she discovered she was able to make objects move without touching them. She could create fire, wind and even make the ground shake. Her foster family, mistaking this for devil possession tried to torture it out of her, and then kill her. Isis was rescued by a family of witches, and their vampire mentor, who unofficially adopted her. Their charismatic leader, Sebastian, came up with an idea that would keep them safe and well fed. They brought their power to Las Vegas under the guise of magicians and quickly became the number one must-see show on the strip. For Isis, she finally has a family that she cares about and who cares about her.

Zack Galloway’s parents were killed in a car crash when he was six. He has been raised by his uncle, Herb Galloway since. Herb, one of the prominent magicians on the strip, trained Zack in the art of magic and made him a prominent part of his show. “The Amazing Herb Galloway show” had a huge following, selling out every night…until The Witches of Vegas came to town. The struggle to compete drained their funds over the years. Now, barely able to get an audience, Herb and Zack are one near-empty auditorium away from losing their theater and their home. Zack owes his uncle everything. He would do anything necessary to keep the man who raised him from joining the Las Vegas homeless.

Neither Isis nor Zack are evil, they’re just on opposite sides of this story. The evil, named Valeria, is already in Las Vegas, it is a long-time enemy of the witches’ mentor with an eye on settling a 400-year long grudge against humanity. If Isis and Zack can’t look past their differences and bring their families together, it could be too late. In fact, it may already be too late, Valeria’s been planning her revenge for a long time.

SPEED ROUND FOR A LITTLE ADDED FUN:

 Speed Round

Favorite movie: Independence Day. Unless I’m looking for a comedy, then Dodgeball.
Favorite book: If I chose a book other than my own, am I bring disloyal to my characters? I wouldn’t want to offend them. If I do, they may not speak to me when I write the next sequel.
Last book read: “The Accidental Time Machine” by Joe Haldeman. I found it accidentally…but it’s a great story.
Favorite color: Blue. Just about everything I have is blue, including my eyes.
Stilettos or flipflops: On me or on someone else? Either way, flipflops.
Coffee or tea: Hot chocolate.
Ebook or audiobook or paperback: Paperback – I’m old fashioned in that I like to hold a book in my hand. Plus, as an author, I can’t sign someone’s ebook. I once tried and almost got knocked out.
Pencil or pen: Keyboard.

Favorite song:  “Save me San Francisco” by Train. Especially live when the audience becomes the chorus.

Meanwhile, the wax from the candles melts onto the cake.

Streak or not: Steak, most definitely steak. STEAAAAAAK!!!!!

Favorite dessert: Pretty much anything freshly baked. Cookies, cake, soft pretzels…if it’s right out of the oven, it’s my favorite.

Favorite meal: STEAAAAAAK!!!!!

Favorite thing to do to relax: Read (as an author I’m obligated to give this answer)

Champagne or gin: Fun fact about me – I’m allergic to carbonation. It’s rare but not unheard of. So, nothing with fizz for me. Sorry, champagne, I can’t drink you.

Paranormal or Historical: Paranormal, I have interest and respect for both, but given a choice, I’ll take Beetlejuice over George Washington.

Wonder Woman or Top Model: I’ll say my wife, mainly because she’s looking over my shoulder while I’m typing this.

Favorite TV show: I’d rather not answer because every time I declare a TV show my favorite, it gets cancelled the next season. Apparently, that’s my wiccan power. (same thing happens with restaurants, cereals and just about any product I deem my favorite, they all disappear.)

Hot or cold: Cold. Easier in public to put on a jacket then strip down to my briefs.

POV: “If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bulls#it. To most people, it all sounds the same.”

I’d die if I don’t have: Um…a heartbeat?

Review or Not Review: That is the question. I’ll say yes.

Tell us a little about Witches of Vegas.

Where can Witches and their vampire mentor practice their powers without being discovered or persecuted?

By using their magic, the Witches of Vegas become the number one act performing on the Las Vegas Strip—a great achievement for them, but not so much for the magicians—who can’t possibly keep pace.

Isis Rivera is the adopted fifteen-year old daughter of The Witches of Vegas. Zack Galloway is the teenage nephew and assistant to the last magician left in the city. Although they should be rivals, when Valeria, a four-hundred-year-old witch with a long-seeded grudge against humanity arrives in Sin-City, both teens act to bring their families together to stop the evil hag in her tracks.

But can the combined witches’ powers and the ingenuity of the magicians be enough to stop Valeria from taking over the city and possibly the world?

Daylan’s world spirals out of control as he searches for Josie. Can he break the age old curse to save her and their future, or will she be lost to him forever?

A peek between the pages of  CHARM ME AGAIN:

She swallowed hard and blinked.

Out of the mist, in full Scottish regalia, a ghost stood, his transparent red and green belted plaid blowing in the breeze.

She shook her head, closed her eyes, scrubbed her hands over her eyes, and blinked them open. “What the hell?” burst from her lips before she could control herself. “It’s some kind of bad dream. Right?” She rubbed her eyes again opening only one this time. “Shit, you’re all still here.” She dropped her arms to her sides and glared at Daylan then Summer. “Someone better tell me what’s going on—right now.” Her hands fisted and unfisted at her sides.

Daylan returned her scathing look. “Later.”

“We meet again Shay.” The ghost said. “What kind of attire are ye wearing?”

“Never mind. Ye are the cause of the problem, Daylan.” The leader glared at the ghost.

“Oh, no—not this time,” the ghost said.

Daylan stood straight. “No way. I’m not taking the blame for this.”

Shay grinned. “Oh, now things are falling in place.” He pointed a finger at Daylan. “You are his namesake and that is why Khellan has returned.” He flicked a finger at the ghost. “And you have attached to your namesake hoping he or his twin can break the curse. What a tangle.” Shifting his gaze to her, he continued. “This young lass is caught in the middle with naught power to protect herself.”

“For god sakes. She’s mortal. How can she be caught in the middle?” Daylan shouted. “She shouldn’t even be able to see what’s happening.”

“Yet she does. Something to think about.” Shay shrugged one shoulder. “She is besotted with you, as you are with her. The lass’s blood may be diluted, but it’s there. The cycle begins again.”

Interview Jeny Heckman Author of The Warrior’s Progeny

Give a warm welcome to Jeny Heckman, author of The Warrior’s Progeny.  Pull up a chair, grab a drink of your choice from the cooler, a Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate, and let’s find out a little about Jeny and The Warrior’s Progeny.

Let’s start with why should we read this book/series and what sets you apart from the rest and makes your book/series unique?

This book is an interesting take on the Greek gods. It’s not a traditional fantasy or paranormal romance and it’s not set in the ancient Greek era. It’s the story of the gods being doomed forever and the only ones that can save them are their modern-day descendants. Mortals that don’t believe in mythical Greek gods. It’s like Percy Jackson meets Nora Roberts. The modern romance isn’t two people finding each other and just working out their quirks. They have figure out and come to terms with what they’re a part of and if what they’re feeling is real or manipulated. So, a little different adventure, with a lot of spice thrown in.

Who is your favorite character of all of the books you’ve written and Why?

It’s got to be Dee Taylor. Dee is a 75-year old woman who lives on Kauai. She only wears brightly colored, floral muumuus and a large floppy hat that she makes wreath around each day. Sometimes the wreath is floral, sometimes there’s kumquats, and a twig, with Dee you never know. She’s tiny, sassy, mischievous, has long, wavy silver hair and eyes the color of blueberries. I knew I had someone special when the fans asked for her story. So, I wrote one entitled, Dee’s Cornucopia, which will hopefully be out around Christmas time.

What do you want your readers to take away from your books?

First, I want them to be involved. I want them to go on the journey and become invested in the characters and their cause. Whether it be from the Greek god’s point of view or the modern-day descendants. Second, I want them to ask themselves what they would do if a stranger befriended them, then told them they were descended from the Greek gods and an integral part of a quest. Hopefully, I’ve captured that incredulity. Finally, I want them to enjoy themselves and be transported from reality, for a short time.

Do you find it easier to write from a male or female point of view? Why?

It’s easier writing from a woman’s point of view for me because I obviously know how they think better. I’m a woman, a mother, a daughter, a sister and a friend, I can place myself in their reality and be able to navigate it. Men are harder but very interesting to write. Often, I will covertly study men and how they behave, from a place of non-judgement. They aren’t so different in feelings, just how they express those feelings, and have varying degrees of emotion about them. They look at things quite literally, rather than emotionally. Not that all women or men are like this but it’s easier to identify. If I’m ever in doubt about what a man would think, I’ll find fun ways to present the scenarios to all the men I know, then they show up in a book, and they’re like, “Whaaat?”

Okay, you’re casting the movie version of your novel – who would you choose for the main characters? We’re talking dream cast.

I was hoping I’d get to answer this question! Okay, so I write with vision type boards on my computer and have photos of the characters to draw inspiration. Without a doubt Colt is Sam Heughan with an American accent. Mila Kunis, would play Lilly Morgan, and the lovely Jody Jaress for Ms. Dee Taylor. Mel Gibson is the perfect Ray Butler (think Blood Father and Man without a face combined). Jennifer Anistan would be Raven Hunter, model Ben Dahlhaus and sexy Finn Taylor.

Tell us a little about The Warrior’s Progeny.

If love dies, can it be reborn…only stronger?

Colton Stone is a newly traded tight end whose reputation is as battered as his football helmet. When he receives a vacation invitation from his new teammates, he accepts. There he collides with Dr. Lillian Morgan, a pediatric cardiovascular surgeon, and doesn’t know what to think.

A widow with two children, Lilly is looking forward to her friends’ wedding. When she meets Colton Stone, his arrogant attitude only makes her long for the love she took for granted. Lilly struggles between letting go of her perfect past for an uncertain future.

Strange events occur, out of the realm of normal consciousness. When black energy touches their world Colt and Lilly become the pawns of the immortal Greek gods. Is the love developing between them natural, or part of a larger prophecy?

A sneak peek between the pages of The Warrior’s Progeny.

Colt’s body temperature heated until his helmet, now that of a Trojan, melted and became part of his skull. Painful, thick, fire plumes ignited from the sides of his head and curved toward the sky, until they solidified in a solid line down the middle of the helmet. Black snake-like smoke wafted up from the earth and encircled his ankles and wrists, locking him into place.

He looked over at Lilly, who now knelt helpless as her skin became dusky, then turned a brilliant shade of blue. However, the color became an iridescent hue that reminded him of something just outside the confines of his mind. Her skin bubbled, separated, and formed into thousands of compact hairs. Small points protruded from her shoulders and down her arms until they freed themselves from the surface of her skin, as she screamed. Several long, hollow shoots grew, lengthening into the elegant, arching rods, as more buds sprouted from them and turned into thready feathers. As the feathers lengthened, green and blue eyes opened in intervals. At a screech of transformation, Lilly turned into a peacock, whose tail plumed out in a perfect fan. A feathered diadem lifted from her skull and the beautiful eyes all blinked at him. He wanted to mate with her, devour her, possess her, and bellowed out an unearthly warrior battle cry. Breaking his bonds, he charged at her.

A bit about An Angel’s Unintentional Entanglement:

Fallen warrior angel, Caden Silverwind, lives alone in Colorado’s rugged Rockies, healing from physical wounds as well as the mental anguish suffered during battles with dark demons. Then he finds a woman barely clinging to life after a horrendous beating. He is not prepared for the entanglement she brings to his life, nor the feelings she awakens in him.

Bureau of Indian Affairs Agent, Mystic Rayne’s personal dilemma and assignment nearly gets her killed. Divine intervention is a complication she never expected and her growing attraction to Caden is undeniable. Can she trust him with her secret?

Their quest to uncover her attacker takes them from the pristine mountains in Colorado to the wilds of Wyoming. Along the way, they find answers which may place them in more danger. Determined to solve the mystery, they must also navigate their feelings and fears to find love and unite heaven and earth.

A sneak peek between the pages of An Angel’s Unintentional Entanglement:  The hook.

Dislodged rocks and sticks bounced down the path ahead of him as he stopped to admire the view and noticed something in the brush.

She lay naked, battered, and beaten several yards off the trail. Her long, straight black hair fanned around her head, tangled with twigs and bits of grass.  Caden moved silently toward her, stopped, and picked up a Bureau of Indian Affairs ID a few feet from where she lay. He stuffed it in his pocket while watching the surrounding area for signs of her attackers. Kneeling down at her side, he saw scratches and bruises on her high-sculpted cheekbones and her full lips had a shading of blue around them. He placed his hand lightly on her chest, felt a weak heartbeat and sensed a brave soul unwilling to give up. God, this is the last thing I need.

Summoning medical help here was futile. The altitude at 12,092 feet, combined with rocky terrain, made it difficult for most rescue vehicles. They’d be too late to save her. He slid his hands under her body. At his touch, a scene unfolded in his mind of snarling wolves, the valiant fight she waged against a male until she was too weak to defend herself any longer, then blackness.
