Halloween Haunting Cripple Creek, Colorado

IMG_3685Cripple Creek Mining District of Colorado is extremely rich in history and it is also touted to be one of the Most Haunted Places in the United States.
On Highway 67, at the base of Pike’s Peak, southwest of Colorado Springs, Cripple Creek sits at an elevation of 9,500 feet. cabin and out buildingThere are mine shafts, head frames, miner’s cabins long abandoned tumbling down. A lonely stone fireplace may be all that’s left of a miners home. Standing among the rubble might cause the hair on the back of your neck to stand on end. A brief visit to one of the abandoned cabins still standing, gives you a window into what it was like back in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s.  Can you imagine a more inviting place for ghost to spend Halloween?

Covered Wagon Pikes Peak Or BustCripple Creek, Colorado was the land of opportunity beckoning men from across land and sea to claim their fortune in the gold fields. Most of the men came from the east where they were farmers and had little knowledge of gold mining. Pikes Peak or Bust was their battle cry, it was painted on covered wagons and carts. But the Rocky Mountains didn’t give up its gold easily, buried deep in the mountain, it was fifty years after the first wave of gold fever hit that the mountain gave up its gold.

Many prospectors lost everything they had, some even their lives in the pursuit of gold. With the tales of fires, (Cripple CRIPPLE-CREEKCreek burned to the ground in 1896) floods, mining accidents, general lawlessness in the beginning then bloody battles between mine owners and labor unions, it’s no wonder stories abound of ghosts haunting this historic town that once boasted one murder a day.

Hotel St. Nicholas

Hotel St. Nicolas

So let’s take a closer look at those ghosts. First up, The Hotel St. Nicholas boasts a colorful history. Today its spectacular view of Cripple Creek, 15 guest rooms, furnished with elegance of a bygone era and one restored historic miner’s cottage still includes tales of the supernatural and unexplained. Originally built as a hospital that served the flood victims in the region in the late nineteenth century, it also served as a home for the Sisters of Mercy. As time went on, the hospital served prospectors and their families and then expanded adding a ward for the mentally ill. The hospital closed in the 1970’s. St. Nicholas is rumored to be haunted by several spirits including children, former patients of the mental ward, nuns and an old cantankerous miner. For more information see Hotel St. Nicholas.

** Tomorrow we’ll take a look at more Halloween hauntings in Cripple Creek including the Imperial Hotel where I once attended a theater production of Dracula during the week of Halloween. That was a hair-raising experience I can’t wait to share with you. Until then Happy Haunting! Bawahahaha

What is  Charm Me Again all about?

For several months a Scottish Highland Ghost has haunted Daylan, in his personal life, his professional life and at his forge. Yet, being a talented warlock, he is no closer to discovering what the ghost wants or why he chose Daylan. A trip to his estranged sister’s home in Colorado may have unforeseen consequences especially when family history leads him to a shocking discovery.

As his attraction blooms for Josie, a yoga instructor in his sister’s studio, he realizes there may be more to Josie than he can imagine. When an ancient rogue Fae Warrior set on revenge kidnaps her in an attempt to claim her as his own, a devastating curse comes to light.

Daylan’s world spirals out of control as he searches for Josie. Can he break the age old curse to save her and their future, or will she be lost to him forever?

Sneak peek between the pages of Charm Me Again:

After waving goodbye to her yoga students, Josie  closed the heavy door and leaned her back against the cool wood. The fire had burned itself out in the fireplace and the sunlight streaming through the front windows heated the room.

She crossed to the secretary and ran her hand over the scarred wooden top. It warmed to her touch. Yanking her hand away, she stared at the desk then back at her tingling hand and wiggled her fingers. What the heck? Something was drawing her to the desk, she eased into the antique wooden chair Summer had given her which nearly matched the intricate flower and leaf carvings on the edges and legs of the secretary.

Her grandmother’s worn leather book materialized on the desktop. The catch released and the cover flipped open. Several pages flipped of their own volition until stopping at a page where flowing longhand words glowed violet on the yellowed parchment. With a trembling hand, she reached, touched the page, and the room spun. Multi-color ribbons streamed in a vortex that sucked her in. Her stomach roiled and she covered her mouth hoping to keep her stomach contents in place. Suddenly as it started the motion stopped. She blew out a breath and glanced around. One thing was for certain, she wasn’t at Earthbound any longer.

She stood at a garden gate, the trellis overhead covered in beautiful blooming flowers the sweet fragrance was familiar, but she couldn’t place it. Roses bushes with the biggest red, yellow and pink blooms she’d ever seen were at the far end of the garden at either end of a wooden settee. The bench had the same floral carving across the back and down the legs as her grandmother’s desk. Only the color on the carved flower petals and leaves wasn’t worn but vibrant. A light touch on her shoulder had her whirling around hands fisted in front of her.

A willowy creature with huge blue eyes and silver hair cascading around her shoulders to the middle of back touched her fists. The caress was warm and calming. “No need to fear me. I mean you no harm.”

Her heart thundered in her chest as she tried to quell her fight or flight response. “Who are you? Where the hell am I?

Charm Me on Sale #99cents #MFRWHooks

Yippee!! #MFRWHooks presents Charm Me, an award winning  #fantasy. A fun and flirty Candy Hearts Romance on sale for 99cents! Can a ski trip turn romantic in Divide, Colorado? Can Valentine Magic bring them together forever?

#MFRWHooks, wildlifePull up a chair, grab a drink of your choice from the cooler, a Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter cookie from the plate, and let’s find out a little about Charm Me. Go ahead you, know you want to download a copy and join the #magical #fantasy, #adventure today! You’ll be so glad you did.

What is Charm Me all about?

Summer Dawn Rylie’s an extraordinary elemental witch whose troubled past haunts her. She’s created a calm life for herself teaching yoga and keeping people at a distance. Her life takes a one eighty-degree turn when she enrolls in a women’s weapons class and meets ruggedly handsome Devlin Sawyer.

Devlin, a former Navy Seal, has sworn off women after two long-term failed relationships, but there is no denying his attraction to Summer. She intrigues him like no other woman ever has. Despite her attempts to ignore him, Summer is drawn to Devlin. His magic signature is strong, but he’s no warlock. Will Valentine’s Day magic find them a future together?

Sneak peek between the pages of Charm Me

Getting to her feet, she brushed the dust from her black yoga pants, tugged at the bottom of her bright orange tunic, and flipped the light switch on. A soft glow of florescent lighting flooded the large room, soothing Summer’s nerves. Guess she would never be the same carefree individual she was before the incident. Oh, shake it off. You’re safe and it’s time to get on with life. “Come on Pip, let’s get this place open.”

A massive stone fireplace towered in the corner.  She picked up an arm full of wood and flung it in the general direction. Logs landed in the fire pit and neatly arranged themselves in a tepee shape. With a magic flick of her finger toward the hearth, flames raced up the aspen logs. “That’s better.”

She raised her arms, about to send the yoga mats back to their proper place when the heavy wooden front door creaked open. Piper rushed toward the door, teeth bared and a growl rumbled in her throat. Summer whirled around and yelped as Devlin ambled into the room, black hair tousled and glistening with melting snowflakes. His nonchalance at the dog’s approach surprised her as he slowed to a stop. Piper sniffed around him, backed up a few inches, then stood at alert in front of Devlin.

“You scared the bejeebers out of me.” Summer held her hand to her chest as her heart thundered.

“What are you doing here?”

“Call your guard dog off and I’ll tell you.” The corners of Devlin’s mouth curved up into a smile, a faint light twinkled in the depths of his dark eyes.

“Piper, leave it…come.” The dog gave Devlin a last sideways glance, trotted back to Summer and sat at her side.
